Monday Morning Check-In: Goal: 25lbs. Week2 -2.5 Total -4.5 I'm happy with results of eating habits (low carbs, which I have to stick to as am pre-diabetic)--and when I can get on track with sleep and exercise (need more of both)--well, I can't help but think that will make a huge difference. Interval training seems the way to go for burning fat--thanks, hwc. I read soooo many articles on diet and nutrition in the last couple of weeks that I am on overload. And I just took notes on the additional info posted by you all since last week! AND Rabbit tweeted this link that makes me just go WUT?! Do I really have to go vegan? @rabbittopia must read about nutrition and plant based diet: The China Study en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_China_Study_%28book%29When I was still teaching, I had MANY students recommending a vegan diet. Growing up in the midwest with a cattle feeding/broker dad, I just don't know if I'll ever be able to do that. Anyway, I feel a little overwhelmed with info at the moment, so I'm going to stop studying up for a week or so. There are 2 things that are bothering me right now... *I want chocolate once in a while...whattaya think...best to just buy a plain bar of DARK chocolate (or a bag of ch. chips) and allow a bit of that occasionally? I made some chocolate bark with just virgin coconut oil and cocoa w/walnuts or almonds in it, and it's good--low carbs, but LOTS of calories...I need to check out carob again maybe. *And BREAD. I am freakin' craving bread. Any suggestions on healthiest brands or types of whole grain flour to make your own or ANY way to get a healthy bread-like food worked into my life long-term? Stampsgal, Lakota--I've been allowing myself a LITTLE caffeine-free Diet Coke--and after reading an article on problems with ALL sugar substitutes, am trying to cut out even that. (Raw stevia seems to be rec'd as the best substitute if you just have to use one.) As for diets*, I don't do them. I want to be reminded of (and re-research) the healthiest possible unprocessed foods to have in my kitchen and then stick to them FOREVER...always knowing that if go out and celebrate or have a drink at home or fall off the nutrition wagon in any way, I can recover quickly. *OH-but I will say that when my mom was in the hospital her nurses were raving about South Beach because they said it's the only food plan that just knocked fat right off the mid-body. Anyway, THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR THE GREAT TIPS!

I am very reluctantly and embarrassingly checking in.
I have totally NOT lost, but gained back the previous weight (2lbs) from the last 2 weeks. Boo! No clue why, not really eating any different, or anything that would make the weight come back on. Guess I need to do serious dieting now!
Good news: I bought the Dance game for the XBox Kinnect, should be a fun way to get a cardio workout, but I have a ton of reports to do by Feb. 1. I may not get really serious until after my bd next weekend.
Great to hear all the fab results - keep up the good work!

Week 3 check in: Goal 10 lbs., this week -2 lb., total -3 lb.
Haven't exercised because I hurt my back and I haven't done much of anything. It's getting better finally, and I will try some gentle exercise slowly!!
Being more careful about what I eat, and I guess that has helped.

Hello to all great shaping up ladies here! I missed last week, sadly there was nothing to check with - two birthdays in one week and one more this week ::panting climbing from the chair:: :-/ Absolutely no time to look after myself So - all zeros another week. I have two more celebrations (and I'm not talking about Adam's one - what should I have for that? hm-m-m-m, maybe the last ice-cream for the next two months ) and then I'll dive right in... hopefully... if nobody interferes Hope for some results in... two weeks, but I'll check

Goal 25 this week 1.7 total 4.8
hoopla1 As I live in Finland I can't really recommend any products, but since I've recently looked into eating healthy carbs I'll write what I look when choosing bread. If I want to buy bread I usually check it's whole grain (100% of the flour used), doesn't have any additives, has lots of fibre minimum of 6 grams/100 grams (don't know the weight unit you use instead of gram). Usually the rye breads I now eat have from 10 to 15g/100g fibre. Also some breads might have added sugar or syrup and I check to avoid those too. The rye bread I consider the best right now doesn't even have yest. It doesn't have to be rye and I think the most important are the whole grain and the minimum of 6g/100g fibre rules. I also found out that my local shop sells wheat flour that is made for baking cakes and such and still is 100% whole grain. I'm sure you have similar products there. One of the things I have been concerned about is what to do when there is something different from normal routine. So now when I have visitors and have to bake I know I can make even the not so healthy foods a little bit healthier.

Guess I'm checking in too.. LOL I was planning to go juicing, but planning to do it before Adam began juicing. But my plan was only to have juice for dinner, instead of having full meal. Just because I kept on feeling bloated I bought the juicer 4-5 months ago but still have not used it yet.... I'm to lazy :( Anyway .. I just started over the week end and still too lazy to make my own juice so I bought OLDWALLA... yummyyyy. But will see what's going to happen next week.

Hoopla1 - I agree with Jojo on the bread. I used sour dough rye this last week with eggsalad. Delicious - and I had weight loss success. I was good about portion size though. I used one piece of bread, cut in half and made 2 open faced sandwiches from that. South Beach is what I'm roughly following. Haven't read it for a while. Think I'll dig it out and brush up.

Congratulations on everyone's success this week! And even though you may not have lost any weight (or maybe even gained) in my eyes you're still SUCCESSFUL because you're focusing on being a healthier person! YAY US!!!
I took hwc's advice & I'm setting goals of 5 pounds at a time. And guess what? I lost 5 pounds this past week. I was kinda playing around with a low carb diet the week before last, and I was totally MISERABLE. Kept craving breads & sweets but I tried to stick to it. But last week when I found this thread, I said I'm gonna get serious. I've cut out carbs completely...well almost all carbs. I've just been eating lean meats, veggies & salads, eggs & bacon/sausage. It's pretty much the Atkins diet. No bread. No pasta. No potatoes. And the funny thing is, after a week of eating like this, my carb craving is totally gone. I'm not hungry and I have plenty of energy. I seriously don't know what's up with this! Maybe the first week was just letting my body get used to it. I've always been a huge carb eater, so this is kinda freaky that I'm not craving them anymore. (Have aliens taken over my body while I was sleeping?) I know we've debated the pros & cons of Atkins, but obviously it worked for me this past week. I'm gonna stay on it another week & see how much I lose. I'm just waiting for my body to wake up & figure out what's going on & decide "oh no no no - this just won't do. Must have carbs." According to online nutrition info, a small glass of red wine has 5 carbs, so I've had acouple of glasses of wine this week! 5 carbs won't negate everything, right? Well apparently not! I just hope I don't wake up one morning & suddenly go CUCKOO & eat a loaf of bread or something. I'm setting another goal of 5 pounds. If the weather will cooperate (been raining alot), I'll add a walk around the block. I've had a few walks this past week but nothing regular. I totally admire those of you who are exercising. I've never been a fan of exercise & don't know if I ever will be. Maybe I'll gradually try to tackle it. Along with the juicing thing. : I know I'm not going to adopt this strict regiment as a lifestyle, but for acouple weeks I can do it. Then I want to try adding back a few carbs on the weekend as just something different. I don't know how this will all turn out - it's a work in progress, but so far so good. :D

Five pound party time. That's an incredible amount of weight loss for one week! Don't be discouraged if you hit a little plateau. Your experience with carb craving is apparently very typical. The body will shift to burning fat from burning carbs, but it takes a week or two for the changeover to fully take hold. Plus, there's the fact that we are simply used to eating a lot of carbs and there's a psychological adjustment as well. I have found that I really stopped craving all the carbs. We still get a lot of carbs from veggies, salads, fruits and so forth. What I did early on was allow myself one carb dinner a week. A small portion of pasta or pizza with a salad or a sub sandwich. Now, I'm so used to not eating carbs that I don't particularly enjoy those meals, so i seldom have one.
