I'm kind of amazed that evidently Adam (and Sauli) didn't eat solid food for six days. Damn. I don't know if I could do that . . .

I have to say tho, as a fan who is basically only a few months older than Adam, I kinda resent the meme that he only has older fans. EDIT: Also have to say that it's not the older fans per se that are embarrassing to potential new fans, but it's the same group who are at every show who have money to burn and are aggressive and obnoxious and stalkerish. There's a part of me that HOPES AGAINST HOPE that they HATE this new album and GTFO to make way for actual saner fans. I think that there is definitely a 'squeaky (and more cash and time flush) wheel get's the grease' phenomena with regards to how Adam fans have been perceived by the media and in some ways by others outside the fandom. The same faces at radio meet and greets things irks me too, but it is similar to certain prominent personality types interacting with media personalities on twitter or flocking to comments sections -- making noise frequently gets you noticed. The thing that bothered me the most about the fan bit on Ryan wasn't the age or tipsy-ness in fact (or that it was hardly fair to single them out), it was the Elvis comparison. If the squeaky wheels don't seem to be interested in, or are even outright dismissive and contempous of pop music - the genre of music Adam is making, the music top 40 radio is playing, there is a disconnect there, and radio DJs who only really notice these squeaky fans could assume that this isn't a fanbase that their airplay needs to cater to. (Not that they are necessarily making airplay decisions, but you get my drift). There is a fan I follow on twitter who is younger and I've always been really impressed by the way she interacts with media and comments sections by being positive and light. I was looking at Ryan's @ replies and she was one of several younger fans slightly fed up and saying 'I'm right here, I've been here all along, why don't you see me, I feel invisible'. I'm Ryan's age, but sometimes reading through comment after comment here about hating to listen to pop radio, about how it's all crap, about how rap isn't real music (it's been around 30 years, it's not going away, and it does have complexity and validity) I feel the same way, a little invisible. I totally appreciate the diversity of the fanbase here and everywhere else, btw, this isn't directed at anyone, I'm just lamenting a little bit the lack of time to be squeaky I guess. For me my first mental image of Elvis (and I'm a little ashamed that this is frankly the first thing that comes to mind, because I know it's not fair to his legacy at all) is of a troubled Vegas act who died on his toilet and is occasionally spotted like Bigfoot. What if the group of ladies interviewed had said Adam reminded them of Justin Timberlake? Or that they love Adam and Bruno the best of the Male pop singers? How might that have thrown a wrench in the narrative? I'm just thinking aloud a bit. can we all read this again please? I don't want it to get lost in today's goodies. *applyappropriatesmimliesatwill*

He made it sound like stuff is def in the works, not just a hazy possibility, but actual fax stuff planned. This HAS to mean the Olympics (ded) as well as maybe one off special performances. Oh and maybe the James Bond theme is that actually comes to pass!! SQUEEEEEEEEEEE! I KNOW!!!! SQUEEEEING HERE, TOO!!!! I just re-listened 10 times to that Queen bit, and Adam says, I think there's gonna be more stuff coming up this year. That's all I can say for right now...But! The goal is to try to like do my thing, and maybe do a little bit of their thing!

You know what, rabbitrabbit pointed out something. I see pop music get dissed all over the place, and I love pop music. I've said it again, pop doesn't care if you sing well (unless you're Lana del Rey LMAO. Aww, she wasn't so horrible, and "Video Games" the studio version is kind of kill yourself mesmerizing.) So I'd rather have Adam praised for his songs, just flat out, or his beats, rather than his head voice or chest voice by the general public.
BUT I did love his professorial voice tweets. Awesome.
eta: And yay for Adam singing with Queen again. I'd request "Killer Queen." Or Bicycle hahahha

Awesome. yeah, it's fine if you don't like pop music - hey, I don't like everything in pop music either - but IMO it's not such a good idea to make that public as an Adam fan. Top 40 radio will play songs they think their public likes. If you're not their public, they're not gonna care about what you think. But I do feel like there is a way to be praised for BOTH the huge beats and the voice. Christina Aguilera (used to) and Bruno Mars and Adele (now) tout that line in pop. And it's actually a great line to walk, at the edge between popularity and critical acclaim. I think Adam is poised to do it, too; he has the voice, now he just needs the smash songs.

I see this in Adam's mentions (not @'s) all the time, often tweeted by young women not in fandom, and I think it's a joke and meant as a joke by the two DJ's as well. I've never seen it meant in seriousness at all. (Weren't the radio station guys referring to a woman from their station as well? She was making twitter jokes about strap-ons, her and Adam the other day). Adam correctly pointed out the underlying obnoxiousness, but also that it's really meant as a compliment. I get that. And I also get: I KNOW the DJs didn't think it was possible, and the issue was not at all about "was conversion possible," but that the entire concept arises from the preconception (which they WERE perpetuating, joking or not) that a woman cannot find a gay man hotter than shit without thinking she has a chance to sleep with him. This is a myth. It's as big a myth as the conversion BS. Straight women GET that gay men are gay. They can STILL find them extremely attractive without any delusions about ever being with them. And the conversation with the DJs, joking or no, dumbs down that fact, IMO. Reading and catching up and it's late, but today has been interesting, hasn't it? I too am offended both by the ageism shown by Ryan's interview and also by the stoopid "conversion" comments in SF. To me they are just different aspects of a misogynistic mindset. Women are either old and embarrassing or young and stupid. Like Susie, I've met tons of female Adam fans and not a single one had any delusion of converting him. I still think a lot of men are genuinely (and inexplicably) threatened by the idea of a woman being attracted or interested in a gay man. I've had straight men gently break the news to me that Adam wasn't going to fuck me. Well, guess what, dude? I don't want Adam to fuck me. I just want him to sing to me. I'm kind of sick to death of straight men putting women down, and straight men putting gay men down, and women putting each other down. Ugghhhhhhhh >:( On the other hand, I can't wait to hear this album!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yeah, I'm kinda moody tonight. Whatever.

It is the end of a very long and very fun, and often infuriating day. I don't know if I should post this. Probably not.
Sometimes it is worth examining the source of your own beliefs. Yes, as skylar said hours ago, this usually happens when you are older. Ew.
Older women are a stigmatized group as a whole. A special stigma applies to those who do not appear as they "should." As with all stereotypes there is some truth, and it is not hard to find women who fit the stereotype.
As a fan of Adam, there is an extra layer of stigma, for being a member of the group is elective. Special scorn is reserved for those who knowingly join a stigmatized group. Those who are public Glamberts are discredited by definition. Those in the closet are discreditable. The issue is in concealment and "passing." A Glambert might be "out" in one sense and "closeted" in another to avoid the stigma. To lie or not to lie? How much to cover the intensity of one's commitment?
In either case one's identity is diminished. As it has been today.
On another note: if anyone here has any actual interest in some of the topics raised about Elvis, may I recommend the book "When Elvis Died: Media Overload and the Origins of the Elvis Cult" by Neal Gregory. This is a great book that examines how the media handled the news of Elvis's death. Lots in there about how Elvis and his fans were both members of highly stigmatized groups; the later discussion here tonight grows directly out of the contempt with which both Elvis and his fans were treated by the media in the aftermath of the death.
