Yeah, I wonder why Adam keeps saying if it wasn't for his fans he may not have been making this 2nd album. That doesn't compute for me. He's said it at least 3 times now... MY TAKE: It is really simple -- IF fans did not buy his first album, he would not get to do a second album. Every artist who is successful knows that they need to have fans buy their music, but few say it as directly as Adam does. Adam's direct and honest way of telling DJs and whoever tries to make fun of his fan base demographic that there is absolutely no way he is going to go there with them and why. Pretty sure that is the smartest, fastest way to shut them up when they try.

I clearly remember hanging out on ONTD_AI and seeing some of the young things there as they discovered the notion that if the album did not sell enough copies then Adam wouldn't get to make another one. These kids who happily downloaded anything and everything they could get their hands on for free really did not truly understand that without sales the artist could not continue to put out albums. So many people go through life without ever considering the consequences of their actions.

I agree with Susie that Adam would have still had a second album, but the label might not have spent the kind of money on it that they have on Trespassing. So he would have had AN album, but not THIS album. Another way of looking at it is that he wouldn't have had the sales of FYE if it wasn't for all of the fans buying it. (That includes pretty much anyone who bought it unless there were some impulse buyers who bought an album from someone they didn't know.) So all of the fans buying FYE (and tour tickets, and EP/remixes, and so on!) ensured he could make another album. Just wanted to agree with whoever said up-thread that they seem to use a lot of hyphens, ellipses, etc when writing on line. I also do this. I am perfectly capable of writing correct English (except for spelling - that is a lost cause) but when I am writing on line I am trying to be far more conversational than I am in formal writing and those dots and dashes seem to add the pauses or emphasis I am trying to express. I also use the tilde (~) WAY more - actually I can't remember EVER using a tilde in formal writing. Does it even have a purpose? I also use ALL CAPS to try and add the cadence of spoken words to writing on line. Does anyone remember indenting 5 spaces for new paragraphs or leaving 2 spaces between sentences? I still do the 2 spaces between sentences just because my fingers just DO it as I type. Then, if I am on twitter, I have to go back and take them out in order to fit into the 140 characters aralid - I'm not sure if it is always used the same way, I tend to use it when I want to "say" a word in a sarcastic tone. I put it in front of the word that I would emphasize if I was making a sarcastic statement.

And putting a comma before the final and in a series and a comma before conjunctions joining independent clauses? Sigh. Does anyone remember indenting 5 spaces for new paragraphs or leaving 2 spaces between sentences? Uhm, wait, I thought you weren't supposed to put a comma before the and in a series? My French speaking Grandmother who taught High School English always despaired of my English grammar errors.

ljsmack&mys*&@^#r&SusieFierce&Blueberry&Wal&FanOfTheMan&kamar&Q3&bentley&aralid&4EverAdam&JazzRocks&katycake&gelly14&Others: THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! Your kind words mean so much to me - aww I can't stop smiling now! I'm from Finland and I'm only 16 years old... so I'm one of those younger fans, yay!! Here's my Adam story: I probably saw Adam on American Idol a few times, but I wasn't really fan of the show so I didn't think much about it. Then when his first album was a huge hit in my country I listened to his songs and really liked them (back then my favorite was IIHY), but I didn't really know who Adam was (for a while I thought he was from Sweden actually, haha) BTW for a looooong time I also thougth ADAM won the American Idol, not Kris... Okay so then some time went on and I just listened to him from my Ipod and pretty much knew all the lyrics from his biggest hits... but I only really started to pay attention to him (like most of the finns who weren't really fans but liked his music, I think) when he started dating our BB-winner, Sauli (whose fan I already was). It's a little embarrassing but I really became a fan back then even though I didn't even mean to. At first I just started to read all these fan-comments about them and their relationship (blushing) and somehow I just started to notice how beautiful he was - from inside out. I went trough all those old daily threads and stuff. I watched some videos, saw nice pictures, read his old tweets, watched interviews and kind of get to know him along the way, you know? He talked about important things and reminded me of myself a little bit actually (so I could easily understand where he was coming from). But what really maked me his fan was the Montreal Performance... I watched the videos (TALC) and cried!!! That Outlaws of Love performance... it just really touched my heart. There was no turning back then after that. I have his first album (the Tour Edition) and usually listen to it while going to sleep. I've grown to love all the songs of course but maybe my favorites are: Strut, Sleepwalker, Aftermath, Masterplan and WWFM. Adam brings so much light in my life; just today I was feeling really down and could only hum Sleepwalker to myself (I walk around and feel / so lost and lonely) when suddenly the sun came to view after so many weeks of dark clouds only (winter in Finland :()-- and Sleepwalkers lyrics turned into "everywhere we go we're looking for the sun"... He also maked me realaise that I shouldn't be so afraid of who I am - I have to love my self first in order to love the others. I've had some rough times in life and because of his gentle and wise spirit I'm finally starting to get back to my feet again. So thanks to all you amazing fans and sorry for my bad bad bad english (thanks for you kind words about that also - I try my best!)... Yay! I love berting. - Bertie You brought me to tears talking about Adam's gentle, wise spirit. I am so happy you love him like we all do. He is such a special person. I have never known anyone like him. Adam is so open to his fans more than any other performer I know. I am crazy about Sauli and love that he loves Adam and is making him so happy. Welcome Bertie. I am glad you are here.Thank you, I'm also glad to be here now! Atopia already feels like a home. And I'm sure you all understand my obsession with Adam (and Sauli) -Bertie

Thankfully SOPA and PIPA were stopped dead in their tracks by the efforts of hundreds of Websites last week -- mostly lead by two sites -- Wipipedia and Google. BUT the dark forces of the mufti-national media companies (Time Warner, Fox/Media Corp, Viacom, Disney etc.) are working hard to shut down access to music, video, movie, TV Shows and other material online. I am opposed to piracy but I am more opposed to restraining the free exchange of ideas and information around the world via the Web just in the hopes that these huge empires can make an extra buck. And a smaller effort to make UK ISPs the policeman for pirated music distribution failed to stem piracy in the UK and may actually have hurt legal music sales. The is a story about this -- the goose who laid the golden egg. Piracy will not end with taking sites like Megaupload down or with something like SOPA and PIPA. they will just move the servers and the CEOs (?) to other contries were this laws does not apply or there are no extradition treaty. It will not solve the problem. Sorry, I cannot explain it better in English. As long there are people wanting to get something illegally, there will be platforms allowing it and noone will and can stop it. And not everything on Megaupload was illegal and they are punishing all the users exchanging legal data trough it.

LOL, as an editor who works both with print and online, we have different styles for both. We do indent five spaces in print for every paragraph other than the first. We single-space between paragraphs. That looks great in print and is very economical, space-wise, but is very hard to read online. For web stories, we double-space between paragraphs and do not indent. I'm totally with you, pjd, I write online the way I would likely say things in conversation, so much license is taken with standard grammar, but I find it rather liberating since I have to obsess over it at work all the time. As far as I know, the use of the tilde came from Twitter. (Or that's the first time I've notice it used outside of Spanish.) I use it like an alternative to quotation marks (it saves characters in tweets) or to denote italics – basically to convey emphasis or a sarcastic slant to the word. ETA: Oh, also in print and online publishing, two spaces after a period or a colon have been long gone. Again, it's a matter of space efficiency. Now when I see two spaces, it looks so strange to me.

The current big pop stars have all pushed hard to allow fans to share video and live performances online. Lady Gaga and Justin Bieber both became megastars on the web. Adam (and many other pop artists) has done the same thing. I know that the major labels understand the power of the web. The challenge is how to balance that freedom with selling recorded music. 95% of the digital music people of all ages have on devices was not legally purchased.
As far as I can tell, the biggest difference between a 20 year old and a 50 year old and pirated music is that the 20 year olds think it is their right and the 50 year olds know that it is wrong. But the numbers say there are pirates of all ages, all over the world.

Maybe not making a 2nd album the way he wanted it to be? With all the people he wanted, writers, producers, time in his hands, the right promo, knowing that we're so loyal and passionate, we're not going to go anywhere and always be here for him? Just a thought. I think you are absolutely right, gelly. He might have made A second album, but it would not have been HIS second album. I am amazed at how much artistic and creative control he has been given and I think we are a part of that, along with genius that he is and that TPTB recognize both.
