Wanted to get some feedback from Q3 or other people familiar with marketing. What do you think about the single being offered for free, on i-Tunes, with the Deluxe album pre-order? It will cost a lot in i-Tunes charting. Gonna be really hard to get the number up with it being offered free with Deluxe. Is this procedure being done because RCA is so high on the album? Is this a risky thing to do? How many times have they done this? I can't recall any other Idol that has had this happen. :-/ It's been pretty much standard all along. It was done with WWFM off the first album and yes it was the single by release date also pretty sure Cook, Daughtry, Kelly and the others all had the same deal. Single sales are not so much focused on huge first week numbers. It's great to get that but the goals for the singles are to sell the album. They expect sales numbers to build for the singles as radio play increases. Also don't know if you realize but when you do complete the album on iTunes your previous single sales are deducted from the current sales week number and the album sale is counted for that week.

No, they were not free on i-Tunes. They were only free on the official web sites. The i-tunes sales both counted and charted.

I thought I remember it being on iTunes as well but regardless I think all this shows is that RCA is more interested in encouraging album sales than they are in boosting first week sales numbers. They have a good idea what to expect after BTIKM so honestly they know they aren't going to get some insanely huge 1st week number regardless. Obviously they think selling the album is more important. That's been my perception of their focus from last era to now. All of the promo has always been selling Adam himself and the album as a whole with the singles mainly providing a talking point. I doubt seriously that they expect any kind of huge single sales. Unless he had first week sales in the half million or million ball park it wouldn't be news worthy anyway so why sweat it. Seems like unnecessary worrying to me. RCA isn't concerned with fan base bragging rights and that's all any difference would amount to in my opinion.

jonalisblog.com/2012/04/12/adam-lambert-never-close-our-eyes-single-premiere/Adam Lambert: ‘Never Close Our Eyes’ Single Premiere! Check out the premiere of Adam Lambert‘s brand-new track “Never Close Our Eyes!” The track will serve as the second official single off his sophomore album, Trespassing, due out May 15th! The upbeat new single was co-written and produced by none other than Bruno Mars and master hit-maker Dr. Luke and should serve as the proper track to rule the airwaves for Adam. “Never Close Our Eyes” lets Adam‘s powerhouse vocals shine through the massive pop melody and crisp production. It’s been crafted to perfection. What do you guys think?

But Gaga or Madonna don't need their singles to be high on i-Tunes for some radio stations to take notice. I can see that strategy for them being OK. I am wondering why RCA is doing it for Adam? Seems to me, they would want the single to get really high next week. I would think the free i-tunes single strategy is counter productive to that, unless you are huge. The only way it makes sense, to me, is that they are really pushing the album, over the single. But since I have zero marketing experience, I was wondering if we had any experts who could weigh in! I don't really know? You asked who else does this and I listed a few artists that I thought had the same type of offer. Maybe it is some iTunes banner deal. ??? I was thinking NAL's first album had some type of deal like this, because his fans bitched about it for months at MJs. It was some special deal on iTunes where you could get a couple of live performances from the AI tour and LLWD free if you preordered the deluxe CD...or something?

On the free iTunes download -- I think they are focused on selling albums because that is where they will make money. 1. They will not get that many pre-orders for the Deluxe iTunes Album that it will make a huge difference. 2. The primary goal of a lead single -- and NCOE will be functioning as the lead single for Trespassing -- is to sell albums. 3. If someone buys the iTunes Track it is a track sale, when they complete the album, it is a negative sale. So it will go away on the week of May 15th. 4. The digital single sales should peak after Adam in one Idol -- so if they care about peak digital track sales chart position and I think that is a very minor consideration -- they do not want the negative track sales to come out of that week. >> The banners on iTunes are selected by their editors who are separate from their merchants and generally (not always) done independently from promotional deals. Trespassing presale is a big deal and it should be the #1 album on release week (unless SuBo releases an album that week )

It was some special deal on iTunes where you could get a couple of live performances from the AI tour and LLWD free if you preordered the deluxe CD...or something? Many artists do this. Including Idols..... Yes, for Kris's first album there was a special bundle on iTunes that included a few download single and some other iTunes exclusives. It was a special American Idol winners bundle. For David Cook's first album (2008), there was a few download of LO with iTunes preorder. In any case, I am sure RCA and Adam would trade 10,000 track sales for 10,000 album sales. ETA: Bringing this over from DCO because it is an example of the same conversation I am reading here.... The result of the David Cook promotion was that LO track sales were very strong, and so were album sales. The worry was for nothing. In 2009, KA fans complained about the LLWD free download with the winners bundle killing single sales -- turned out LLWD did just fine, it was the album sales that struggled. You can look at case after case and these free with purchase offers do not hurt sales. NOTE: The description of how the free track sales are counted from DCO in 2008 is not correct. iTunes does not put them through as sales ever. Most retailers do not split transactions. SO IF YOU PREORDER THE ALBUM AND GET THE FREE DOWNLOAD IT WILL NOT BE A TRACK SALE. >1 Album Sale counted when the album is released and available for download (delivered) IF YOU BUY THE TRACK AND THEN COMPLETE THE ALBUM AT A LATER DATE, IT IS RECORDED AS 2 SEPARATE SALES TRANSACTIONS. > +1 Track Sale, then +1 Album Sale and -1 Track Sale = 1 Album Sale
