Hmmm, you guys are all making me think.
Nationalglampoon Im not convinced that there isnt a problem of attitude towards gay male celebrities. Most of them remain undercover and gossip magazines are salacious about "who is really gay" etc - that right there indicates a problem.
ETA: interesting to hear Susie's take on the real popularity of gay singers in the US
But I do like it when people try to build on whatever is positive in the situation.
Mellie, I hear you on self-hate, very often our criticism has a huge driver in self-hate.
And bridgeymah, I think you hit it on the sexually strong message adam projects at times which im betting offends some gay people as well as straight people.
On the other hand...when he does a "heterosexual shoot" in details magazines some other gay people - eg out magazine - think he's letting the side down.
basically, lots of people have an agenda and want to push that on him.
One thing that occurs to me: there is an overall hate of sexuality in the collective - its a bad, dangerous, dirty thing and people are too easily labelled promiscuous and slutty.
Adam is sex positive, hell, he celebrates sex. So that makes him controversial for the masses right there.
He iexudes more sexuality than any male or female performer i know. Madonna is dry, Gaga idek, and Britney is a bland doll.
None of them really express the real force of nature power of sexuality.
Thats gonna stir up hatred and fear, fo sho.
And maybe some of that fear is from the gay male community.

So the next question is: why is the gay community resistant to a gay male popstar? Any views? Envy? Its new and unfamiliar? I'm a gay male and that just sounds totally wacko to me ??? Plenty of successful gay popstars here like Jake Shears, Sam Sparro, Joe McElderry, Marcus Collins, Will Young.. don't see the problem. That's the UK, not the US. It is definitely a problem. There are real conservatives in these United states that are trying to take people back to the 18th century, particularly women. It is a big movement, and they are trying to play on people's fears. They are pushing significantly. Gay issues seem to in the forefront in wanting to keep gays as second class citizens. Adam is in the forefront, out and proud and I think is just scares the hell out of these conservatives. So I beleive that if gays were to embrace Adam, they feel that they could lose a battle they have long been fighting for. Unfortunately, it just ain't so. Bigots and narrowmindedness will never change, so it is a losing battle anyhow.

Scissor Sister's haven't been able to get near Pop radio in the US Jake has said quite openly that they are much more successful overseas than here and he has said that Adam is breaking barriers.

I would assume he's talking about the US. He's said before that he's found attitudes much different outside of America. But inside America hardly anyone has a clue who Joe McElderry, Marcus Collins or Will Young are. And artists like Sam Sparro and Jake Shears with Scissor Sisters certainly get love from their compatriots (and Adam gets some too), but not to the extent of Gaga, Beyonce, Xtina, RiRi, etc. In the United States those guys are niche acts, despite their overseas success. Where Adam gets hit the hardest in ways none of these peeps do is that many seem to feel his "image" hurts the gay community somehow. It started even before any of the controversy with Adam struggling to find the balance between being visible and being just a singer, before the fuss over his "coming out" with Perez, or his comments in Rolling Stone, or the fuckery with Out Magazine. During Idol I lost count of the number of times he was referred to as that screaming queen, Liza Minelli, Glamberace, and a thousand other put downs from his own community. And you see it now in how some gay media sites spin their often grudging coverage of him, and how their regulars comment on him. I certainly don't think all gay dudes should be required to like Adam's music. But I am often mystified by the visceral dislike that they have for him that goes beyond his music. That said, the worst possible thing straight girl fans like myself can do is go to those sites and lecture them on how they're totally wrong LOL. That just makes things 10x worse. Hopefully fandom will steer clear of places like the Queerty comments and just let it alone.
