I'm a gay male and that just sounds totally wacko to me ??? Plenty of successful gay popstars here like Jake Shears, Sam Sparro, Joe McElderry, Marcus Collins, Will Young.. don't see the problem. That's the UK, not the US. It is definitely a problem. There are real conservatives in these United states that are trying to take people back to the 18th century, particularly women. They are pushing significantly. That's a shame.. but yeah thinking about it now I've seen videos of people complaining about "homophobic gay people" and I've just never understood it. |

 It's so nice and warm here in Finland!  I've spend so much time outside reading books lately. There was supposed to be a point to this post... but I can't seem to remember it anymore.  Oh yeah - In the new Sauli blog he said he's coming to Finland in the summer! Nice comfirmation even though I was pretty sure he's coming here... His friend Niko is getting married this summer, if I remember correctly. And then there's still maybe chance for the Tutka Roadshow thing... I hope they will at least do something!! :D Finland is so beautiful at summer! |

So the next question is: why is the gay community resistant to a gay male popstar? Any views? Envy? Its new and unfamiliar? I'm a gay male and that just sounds totally wacko to me ??? Plenty of successful gay popstars here like Jake Shears, Sam Sparro, Joe McElderry, Marcus Collins, Will Young.. don't see the problem. LOL! Not one of those is big in the US! Scissor Sisters and Sam have their followers, but as for radio play, nope. ETA: And here's something I noticed this year, the last 2 award winners for Trevor Project have been straight females. Really? :-/ With several out and proud gay men, they couldn't have recognized someone who has actually lived the "torment" they are trying to combat with their organization? |

The following consists of my most likely unpopular opinions.
Regarding the "gay community" resistance to a "gay popstar". First of all it is even sort of weird to me that adam comments on this since he likes to think of himself as "post gay". Secondly, I don't love/support all women pop stars because they are women. I have a gay acquaintance who does not liked Adam's music because he considers him screechy/screamy. I am more inclined to believe that Adam has just not created the right song. Hopefully Trespassing has one that will get the response.

Hmmm, you guys are all making me think. Nationalglampoon Im not convinced that there isnt a problem of attitude towards gay male celebrities. Most of them remain undercover and gossip magazines are salacious about "who is really gay" etc - that right there indicates a problem. ETA: interesting to hear Susie's take on the real popularity of gay singers in the US But I do like it when people try to build on whatever is positive in the situation. Mellie, I hear you on self-hate, very often our criticism has a huge driver in self-hate. And bridgeymah, I think you hit it on the sexually strong message adam projects at times which im betting offends some gay people as well as straight people. On the other hand...when he does a "heterosexual shoot" in details magazines some other gay people - eg out magazine - think he's letting the side down. basically, lots of people have an agenda and want to push that on him. One thing that occurs to me: there is an overall hate of sexuality in the collective - its a bad, dangerous, dirty thing and people are too easily labelled promiscuous and slutty. Adam is sex positive, hell, he celebrates sex. So that makes him controversial for the masses right there. He iexudes more sexuality than any male or female performer i know. Madonna is dry, Gaga idek, and Britney is a bland doll. None of them really express the real force of nature power of sexuality. Thats gonna stir up hatred and fear, fo sho. And maybe some of that fear is from the gay male community. Really good points.. America is so sexually repressed ,yet this has lead to a country full of pornography,sexual crimes against women and children and on and on.Such a hypocritical puritanical BS society. Adam does radiate glorious guilt free sexuality,the good kind ,the free uninhibited kind . It's kind of part of what women's liberation was seeking,besides equal pay and equal rights,women wanted to be sexually free,sexually gratified. The threat of Aids in the past, really set that gay man freedom back for decades.With medication the threat has lessened. Before the disease,there was much more androgynous sexuality in performances,like Bowie,Prince.Mercury.Can you imagine Adam performing in that era.Oh Freedom!! |
