Sometimes the planets just line up for Adam – but Idol didn’t fare as well

Adam’s appearance on Idol was a major win for Adam. Almost every review was favorable and ever some of his harshest critics were positive about his clean, more accessible look and his straightforward acoustic performance. It was a win-win-win for Adam. He looked better than ever, delivered a great performance. And was his normal likable, charming self in the post-performance chatter.

Idol, on the other hand, did not fare as well, although it did OK. Final ratings 22.053 million viewers. Compared to last year, Idol was up 6% in total viewers but down 4% in the adult demo (18-49) for a 6.5 rating in the adult demo. (There is a premium on the ad rates for viewers between 18-49 years old and a decline in this group is very costly.)

American Idol (61 minutes)
- 22.053 million viewers
- 12.6/20 HH
- 6.7/19 A18-49

At first glance that doesn’t look so bad. But since last year was also down, looks to me like Idol is continuing a mature program that needs to re-invent itself -- or will continue to loose critical 18-49 year old viewers.

As always, the Idol ratings seem to be driven by the competition and not guest performers. It does not appear that Adam’s presence on the show had a major effect on ratings, but it will be interesting to see what the upcoming weeks draw. (Next week is The Black Eyed Peas and Lee Dewyze – will be interesting to compare ratings)

In any case, and excluding the benefit of all the surrounding press and buzz, Adam's performance was seen by over 22 million people -- and some of them are buying his music.

Good Morning! Just came back from a lovely morning stroll with the dogs (2 own and one visiting one - his lucky owner is in Milan for 5 days for shopping).

In Japan there is a warning out for a new explosion in another reactor . They expect it to be like yesterday's one with no more damage. But you can all read the news, there are plenty of them available.

The whole AI appearance was a huge win for Adam. Many non-fans on Twitter were impressed with his voice and gushing how sexy he looked.

I am less impressed with people who were "This is the Adam we loved on Idol two years ago, not the glitter and glam person, now we are fans again". What if he decides to perform in drag next time? Is he then "Persona Non Grata" again?

But all in all for me an interesting experience because I was never part of the Idol Bubble, only watched Adams videos, but now I have got a good impression of the whole "madness" surrounding that show.

Thrilling that he got new fans but what if???
I will choose to believe that when they'll get on board they wouldnt want to leave.At least the majority of new fans.
I dont know much about idol also, even though i watched every season but i watched it just for fun. Not interested in any of them.Only David Cook caught my attention but not like Adam.To me he DID break idol.

To see Adam being so excited with working on his new album makes me jump up and down and him being so secretive makes me think we are up for some huge surprises and some fantastic collaborations.

One might probably with Sia.

Spring/summer will be dull while waiting - I hope we get some little gems to bring us over the time.... 8-)

They have not yet found the person we have - they go just for the looks, not even his voice is as important. But it is a beginning for those people anyway :D. He is a fascinating package.

Adam's season at AI was the first one I watched - I'm not sure if we had the earlier ones... Tatum, do you know...? I watched last year's also but not this new one since my old TV-set decided that enough is enough after 13 years of service. Have not yet bought a new one since right now I don't have time to watch, too many projects to work on at home (and maybe I should mention time spent on here too in between the project research and writing ???).

I'm not going to hold my breathe waiting for Jessie J to duet with Adam.

That time that Adam said on twitter He liked Her song and by the next morning Jessie J had tons of new twitter followers. Jessie J was surprised by the number of new followers and still played dumb and never mentioned Adam even after a bunch of people told Her that all the new followers were because of Adam.

Jessie J sang with I think his name is B.O.B. last night on SNL. Jessie J seems to be going for the rap/hip hop market here in North America. Not really Adams market.
