Mika - thank you so much for bringing this over! - Adam singing "Come Home" with the Upright Cabaret (New Year's Eve, 2008). For all his current successes and new songs, this one performance always touches me. He reaches so deep. I used to play this video over and over late at night, but recently have been more caught up in his recent stuff. It's good to go back to his performances with the Upright Cabaret again to rekindle why I was drawn to Adam in the first place.

Aw, that video was one of the first things I found on the Internet after I needed more Adam than AI was giving me, and it was so full of beauty and feeling that my admiration reached new levels after that. It still makes me feel so much whenever I hear it, beauty and sadness and vulnerability, all expressed so intimately in a way that connects and pulls me in and makes me want to stay longer and revisit often.

mika, I had not seen "Come Home" before. Aw! Even at this early stage, I wonder from where does Adam draw such depths of emotion? How can he start the heart beating faster just by spreading his hand across his chest? This month's National Geographic has a story about the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, and includes a picture of a Oglala heyókȟa . It says that in the Oglala religion, a heyókȟa is a person who receives sacred visions, and who employs clownish speech and behavior to provoke spiritual awareness and keep balance. I have heard of "sacred clowns" in other Native American belief systems as well. This idea reminded me of Adam. I still find myself coming back to the idea of Adam as a modern-day shaman of some kind -- just this week he even went off into the desert and emerged transformed. I read up a bit on heyókȟa and found some interesting things to think about. Heyókȟa as spiritual guides are very contrary in nature. They often do unconventional things like ride a horse backwards or wear their clothes inside out. With their fooling around, the heyókȟa ask difficult questions and say things others are afraid to say. "I'll be your mirror" seems to be the motto of the heyókȟa ... they essentially force people to examine their own doubts and fears. They heal emotional pain by singing about things that would normally be shameful. They make people laugh and smile in times of despair and they deliberately provoke people who take themselves too seriously. They confront those in positions of power and authority. Heyókȟa don't care about taboos, rules, or social norms. When a vision comes from the thunder beings of the West, it comes with terror like a thunder storm; but when the storm of vision has passed, the world is greener and happier; for wherever the truth of vision comes upon the world, it is like a rain. The world, you see, is happier after the terror of the storm... you have noticed that truth comes into this world with two faces. One is sad with suffering, and the other laughs; but it is the same face, laughing or weeping... as lightning illuminates the dark, for it is the power of lightning that heyokas have. —Black Elk, quoted in Neihardt

The forging of a new orthodoxy has been unfolding today on the main thread. Pretty interesting to watch it in action. Still a work in progress. Mszue, are you around? Would love to hear any thoughts you wished to share about realness and emotional labor in light of recent developments. Or should we wait until we see the full monty woops may god strike me dead big enchilada in all its glory? For the bird lovers ... very moving ...

The forging of a new orthodoxy has been unfolding today on the main thread. Pretty interesting to watch it in action. Still a work in progress. i'm not sure what you mean? im curious but also afraid to ask cause i got a little (low level) riled today over there. of course a lot of things have been said - certainly some i thought were nice but overall some of what is going on is what leaves me out of sorts - i was actually sorry i read it and annoyed with myself for doing so - it's just i miss some people who don't come here. though a lot of those people don't post as much these days. hmph this is just a drive by - i have to run some errands but i'll be back later i have questions about the interesting posts above (bounce bounce bounce

:D Mahailia, what a beautiful story. A few years ago, we had a speaker at a teacher workshop day who asked us to think back about our most memorable and impactful things from our own days as students. What type of memories were they? Chemistry tables? Math formulas? Historical dates? Pretty much, these were not what came to mind for most of us. It was experiences (such as Lynne's Shakespeare productions) or a relationship with a teacher or how we were made to feel about something or ourselves (Mahailia's story). Lynne, I'm so glad to hear you will have classroom iPads. We've had laptops for each middle student most of the 11 years I've been teaching. So I've had quite a bit of experience using them in the classroom. As a music teacher, I use a lot of YouTube videos. The performing arts were never intended to be just heard/read and not seen. So viewing performances is very important for me. You might find plays (at least scenes) to watch. Also, I've spent some major time in the last couple days checking out www.edmodo.com/ This has been recommended by fellow teachers. It is apparently designed to feel similar to FaceBook (I don't know because I don't do FB), therefore providing a familiar interface for all. You can have online discussions with a class (which draws the quiet ones in) , and provide students with assignments, quizzes, and even grades. There are YT tutorials created by users. I ended up just reading the online help. I'm most interested in the feature that allows me to attach files for use by students. Then they can upload files for me as part of completing assignments. I'm going to give Edmodo at try this fall. Holst We have had a projection system that allows us to project the Internet big screen in each classroom for some time now, but this year, we will also have apple tv in every classroom and every student and teacher will have an iPad. Then we will have students download apps we will be using in our classrooms. Plus we can now stream from our iPads on our big screen projection system. So many cool possibilities!

Juniemoon - from the "bird lady" of the Moon Garden, thanks for the video concerning the rehabilitation efforts for that Bald Eagle. I do know that for a bird of prey, such as an owl or a raptor like this eagle, injuries such as this are quite devastating and can prevent its ability to obtain food and water. Birds that are able to be rehabilitated will never be able to survive in the wild again, but can continue to be cared for and be used for educational purposes in local zoos, nature centers and even in classrooms. A Bald Eagle is such a magnificent creature that it would be a privilege to be able to see one up close.
As for the "new orthodoxy", I'm not sure what that means either. I check the main thread daily, but sometimes it seems like a mish-mash of several topics with various opinions mixing around and stirring back and forth. I guess it's especially true lately while we're waiting for more definitive information from Adam himself. For me, I'm content to hang out here in the Moon Garden and wait for whatever will be, will be.

Maybe I'm all wet, but I see folks trying to reconcile the return to what will obviously be more a flashy look with the pretty strong statements Adam made a few months ago that his look was going organic and high fashion. That he had, in effect, outgrown something that he is now returning to.
I never believed it for one minute ... thought it was marketing and that he made a good run at it ... but Adam can't be wrong, so history needs to be rewritten. People aren't sure which way to jump yet. That's all I meant.
Please don't kill me.

I can't get worked up over changes in hair and makeup. I am entertained by them though ;D.
