Damn, Junie! The Star Trek video cuts off for me at 0.39, so I can't get the full impact of the message. And, where do you come up with this stuff? You are brilliant! This is why I love the Moon Garden, although some of the big words still stump me. Your analysis is spot on, thanks for expressing it so well.

mahailia, the video cuts off for me too in the embedded version. I can watch the whole thing when I go to Youtube. Weird! Anyway, you got the main part I wanted you guys to see. P.S. Anybody who calls me brilliant for using old Star Trek videos as metaphors (instead of pelting me with tomatoes) can sit right here by me and have some tiramisu.

tiramisu ~ another big word, but accompanied by a visual, good, and yummy looking. Oh, the things I learn here. Sometimes the big words are ones I have seen, but don't really know the meaning of. Sometimes they are ones I have never even seen before, like tiramisu. I know none of the menus out here have this. The brilliant part was the analysis on shifting standards, and the link to the article on traffic engineering and the analogy about ordered chaos. But you already know that.

Checking in to wave at the shadows and drop off thick carpets for a winter corner in the Garden - be warm.
I also have old books to shove in my luggage - thick and wonderfully smelly - yet full of new words and fresh thoughts. I have an impossible, virtual steamer trunk that defies the time/space continuum. I'll pack up the Garden Library for the season - it folds neatly into the new trunk of endless wonder. And I shall add one bright koi in an immense crystal bowl with one lily pad to keep me company. Mirages won't mind I think.
Travel is good for the soul if not the body - I'm briefly grounded and w/tiime to reflect I feel I've learned much about the sometimes surprising shape of bullying. I must ponder this knowledge while slowly folding it into the right shape to avoid cutting myself on the edges.
I've seen so many birds on this trip - (hopefully) soon to see even more in the marshes! I don't have names for them but they don't have a name for me either so that's fair.
"I never saw a wild thing sorry for itself. A small bird will drop frozen dead from a bough without ever having felt sorry for itself." (dh lawrence)
Happy November~ May All Saints Day (and All Souls Day) be Kind to you
Normally indifferent to this song but Amy's version moves me. For you, my friends.

I didn't see a train wreck on the main thread today. Maybe I missed it, as is often the case. I have been enjoying the more "free-form" discussions the last couple days. Maybe it happens because there isn't much actual news. I enjoy the contrary opinions--but only when they are expressed with civility. The only thing that really bugs me is mean-spiritedness. The loss of one of our members the other day happened in part after someone else commented about her post that they get tired of people saying that kind of "shit." (Not a direct quote except for the actual quoted word.) I think our mods are pretty reasonable. It is clear they are all thoughtful and intelligent people. I'm sure not interested in the job, especially after trying to manage student behavior at school all day. It can be exhausting. On another note (probably belongs in the social action thread), I'm very anxious to see the outcome of the gay marriage proposition here in Maine. Only in the last few weeks has the opposition started campaigning hard. I think the proponents have had some very effective ads. However, I don't think I've seen one that actually features a gay couple. Maybe that is too threatening or maybe gay couples haven't wanted to be featured on tv. I have no idea. This one features a gay man who is a firefighter. Another topicOn a personal front, I got an email from my sister-in-law who wanted me to know that she and my brother just found out that one of our nephews is bi-sexual. She said that his father (my other brother) "casually" mentioned it because the nephew has had a long-term relationship with a woman break up and is now already living with a guy (romantic relationship). The nephew was previously married briefly to a woman. So until now, the bisexuality was not a subject of discussion because he has been involved with women. I felt bad for this SIL and brother because I've known since the nephew was a teenager that he is bi. It hasn't been a secret, but I guess no one ever mentioned it to them. She said they are "digesting" the news and that their H.S. senior daughter says she supports her cousin. Yay! So this news was surprising and thought-provoking for them, but I don't believe there is homophobia present. But I do feel bad that SIL and brother probably feel out of the loop on this. The topic just never came up. I assumed everyone knew. I remember when I found out about the bi-sexuality that I gave it a few minutes of thought, but not much. I've known so many gay people (just a couple bi) that it wasn't something I needed to grapple with as many people do. I'm a classical musician after all, as are members of my family, and we have a high proportion of gays in our ranks. Big deal. Even my 85-yr-old Dad and his wife (extremely religious people) are surrounded by many dear younger friends who are gay and who are married in the eye of their church, although not legally. In a way, I'm sort of impressed with my family because the nephew's sexuality has NOT been a topic of discussion for the last 15 years. His father doesn't really care and has always be rather matter of fact about it. It probably didn't occur to him that some people might think he should inform everyone (and IMO he shouldn't have to). Maybe some of us have entered Adam's post-gay world where LGBT-ness does not have to be announced. So, while I'm sorry that my SIL and brother may feel they were in the dark, I'm happy that the topic hasn't ever been a big deal. To quote a somewhat famous blond Finnish man--"YAY"

UH, oh........ another train wreck on the main thread. And it all started out so fiercely. Will it ever end? This is what I was referring to: belle said: I see you had a lot of Sauli-related, but civil, discussion yesterday - great! However, please remember that we all have our personal special interests and concerns that don't represent the whole group we belong to... Also I hope this athmosphere will be permanent and that everybody can express their opinions without getting 'attacked' with the opposing opinion five times over from the same poster. I am all for 'live and let live'! Read more: atop.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=daily&thread=1186&page=4#ixzz2B510Vh4Ca new member made a comment about how Adam referred to Sauli at the Halloweenie party, the vid from Adam's segment with Lance Bass had been posted. There was some what of a pile on by a lot of people about her comment, and a lot of generalizations made that were discussed, and picked apart by the majority of posters. Luckily, the new member, ninaballerina, had a great attitude and didn't run away. Progress, YAY!!! Also, this is one of the first times I have seen an indepth discussion about how the peeps on this board view Adam and Sauli's relationship. Very interesting and very multi-cultural.

Yeah, about the time mahailia posted, it looked like things were about to get out of hand on the main thread, but then they didn't. It's so unpredictable. It did turn out to be interesting instead! holst, I loved your story about your bi nephew and the family's overall good acceptance of his nature. This issue has evolved so much over my lifetime! I remember when I was a kid, my two best friends were gay boys, but they weren't out at all. I remember how the only portrayals of gays in the media were either predatory or tortured and suicidal. In fact, the first TV show I remember showing a positive portrayal of gays was the police sitcom Barney Miller. There was a recurring role for a gay couple, and though they're stereotypical by today's standards, it was quite pioneering at the time, and most of the laughs come at the expense of homophobes: Your post made me think about how far we've come as well as how far we still have to go. Since it's Friday I thought I would post again about my Photoshop lessons, just for fun. This was the first project where I had to do some real problem-solving instead of just painstakingly following along with the tutorial. This time I wanted to do a tutorial in which the outcome was a "vintage" poster. I had in mind to make something along the lines of this: And I really wanted to use this great picture by TALC tuke 18: Right away I ran into problems. Remember how last week I talked about how it wasn't that hard to cut something out with defined edges? Well, this image didn't have defined edges. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't get it right. There was too much black. Despair! Then I found out how to use the Shadow/Highlight tool. It turned out that I could bring out the definition in Adam's outline after all. It was there the whole time! I did it and changed the image to black and white: Pretty amazing! I decided I liked the way the background looked so much that I wanted to keep it, so I didn't even end up cutting out the image. I learned how to draw shapes and then turn them into "masks" to make the area for the text for my poster. Then I found a vintage font to create the text, learned how to scale it to make it fill up the space the way I wanted, and even how to make the letter spacing slightly uneven so that it looked hand-set instead of digital and perfect. Finally I wanted to "degrade" everything so that it looked like the beat-up old stuff that people paid big bucks for in my mom's estate sale. This involved blurring the text slightly and sharpening the shapes so they look a little like ink ran from cheapo printing. Finally I used a brush that was white/transparent to paint grungy faded places on top. I was pretty tickled with the result. My favorite project so far.
