So no one liked the dancing turnip, eh? ... You guys ... I have some good personal news and it is such a relief. A couple of months ago, I found out that the program I work on, and therefore my job, was going to be eliminated in the next round of budget cuts. I was very worried. The library I work for was reduced by over 60% in the last round of cuts, and there is no particular reason to think the additional cuts won't go through. I decided I'd better start looking right away, since it could take months to find another suitable job. Anyway, today I was offered a good position similar to what I do now ... the salary is a bit higher and it is closer to my house. I accepted and start the first week of December. Such a great feeling! I'll miss the people at my old job, but so happy to have found something more secure and still in my field. Yay!

Junie, great news! I haven't had a chance to look at the turnips yet, but looks funny. I'm still pretty swamped and anticipate being so for a while. Started a new job and enrolled in classes this week.

Ha, thanks guys. Still feeling relief. One of my friends who was laid off the last time around was out of work for 9 months; I feel fortunate to have landed something before the ax even fell. Yay. I admit the turnip ain't that deep. LOL.

As a gardener, I appreciate harvesting an 'interesting' vegetable now and again. (take your giggles when you can, right?) That turnip is incredible, it's journey cracks me up. Thanks for sharing it.
Congratulations on your new position.

Congrats junie! Fellow gardener with miss feather bottom - love the turnip. I've had some carrots turn out in some interesting forms. Zucchini and cukes can be quite "interesting" too. ;D
OT, and not even sure if this deserves any comments. I was listening to my itunes library yesterday and 3 songs played one after the other that made me think of how some things are as relevant about the world today as when they were written.
The first one - The Beat Goes On - started the theme. Kind of cute and corny, but "teeny bopper is our new born king" made me chuckle. Little did they know how far unto the future that lyric would go. Anyone remember who the teeny boppers were back then?
Next, I heard one from my favorite groups of all time (sorry Adam). Loggins & Messina - Same Old Wine. Kind of a protest song that is unfortunately oh soooo true today. Betcha didn't know that Kenny played such a mean harmonica.
Gotta post the lyrics because I'm sure no one has heard thuis aklbum cut before.
Well we give them the election That keeps filling our heads full of lies Can we trust in new directions When their promises are in disquise Well someday the truth will catch up I just hope it don't catch us all by surpriseThey preach this thing, religion But we show no faith at all Follow suit on Sunday But on Monday forget it all If the times should find us needing him Then my friend, Lord have mercy on our soul
[Chorus:] It's the same old wine In a brand new bottle It's the same old wine In a brand new bottle
Teach our children virture Then send'em off to war Then we ask ourselves the question What and the hell are we fighting for? If you suddenly find a reason Well don't be afraid to open the door Well don't be afraid
[Chorus]
It's the same old wine From a brand new bottle It's the same old wine From a brand new bottle The same old wine From a brand new wine
As a huge fan of the older country music (when it actually sounded like country) - especially Merle Haggard, I've always loved the clever lyrics to this one - Are the Good Times Really Over for Good (junie, I'm sure you know this one). Talk about someone coming out of hardship and ending up with major success and fame.
Haggard's father died when Merle was nine years old. He soon began committing petty crimes and truancy. Due to shoplifting in 1950 (aged thirteen), Merle was sent to a juvenile detention center.[2] In 1951, aged 14, Haggard ran away to Texas with a friend, but returned that same year and was arrested for truancy and petty larceny. Again escaping the juvenile detention center, he went to Modesto, California. He worked odd jobs—legal and not—and began performing in a bar. Once he was found again, he was sent to the Preston School of Industry, a high-security installation. He was released fifteen months later, but was sent back after beating a local boy during a burglary attempt. After his fourth release, Haggard saw Lefty Frizzell in concert with his friend, Bob Teague. After hearing Haggard sing along to his first two songs Frizzell allowed Haggard to sing at the concert. The audience enjoyed Haggard and he began working on a full-time music career. After he had earned a local reputation, Haggard's money problems caught up with him. He was arrested for attempting to rob a Bakersfield tavern in 1957[3] and was sent to the San Quentin state prison for three years. While in prison, Haggard ran a gambling and brewing racket from his cell. During a time of solitary confinement, he encountered an alcoholic mathematician and death row inmate, Drunk Adam. Haggard had the opportunity to escape with a fellow inmate (nicknamed "Rabbit") but passed. The inmate successfully escaped, only to shoot a police officer and return to San Quentin for execution. Drunk Adam's predicament along with that of "Rabbit" inspired Haggard to turn his life around. Haggard soon earned a high-school equivalence diploma and kept a steady job in the prison's textile plant. Haggard cited a 1958 performance by Johnny Cash as his inspiration to join the prison's band.[4] Upon his release in 1960, Haggard said it took about four months to get used to being out of the penitentiary and that, at times, he actually wanted to go back in. He said it was the loneliest he had ever felt.[
During his songwriting career, Haggard has earned 48 BMI Country Awards, nine BMI Pop Awards, a BMI R&B Award, and 16 BMI "Million-Air" awards, all from a catalog of songs that adds up to over 25 million performances.[13] Merle Haggard accepted the prestigious award for lifetime achievement and "outstanding contribution to American culture" from the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on December 4, 2010.[14] At a December 5, 2010 gala in Washington, D.C. he was honored with musical performances by Kris Kristofferson, Willie Nelson, Sheryl Crow, Vince Gill, Jamey Johnson, Kid Rock, Miranda Lambert and Brad Paisley. He has won 3 Grammy's, 13 ACM awards, 5 CMA awards, and was inducted into CM Hall of Fame in 1994. (Sorry for the CM lesson, but it shows that anything is possible and hopefully Adam will have some of this success in the future.)
Some of the lyrics might offend some folks, but I love the sentiment and he does end it on a positive note. The words could certainly be updated for the problems in today's world.
