ETA: I guess I better qualify this by saying it is all "In My Opinion" and YMMV. Cassie, your comment reminded me of a funny recurring bit on The Good Wife. One of the judges (played by Ana Gasteyer) who presides over many of the cases featured on the show insists that every remark by every lawyer must include the phrase "in my opinion." This gets to sounding really silly after awhile. (See clip below for an example.) Perfect! In my opinion.

Don't know if he is playing it or not. Didn't really pay attention. But, I could teach anyone with ten fingers to play that piano accompaniment in ten minutes, and that is being generous. THAT is not being a pianist. Those who think that Adam is not a REAL musician because he doesn't play an instrument.... he could easily play piano like this, or strum three chords on a guitar like many WGWG do, actually. It is basic piano or guitar 101. So glad he doesn't bother trying. Let him concentrate on being the outstanding vocalist he is. adam would kill to have Justin's material though. his last three singles have been really good. I really don't want to like jb, but I couldn't resist with this last album. it's all about the song in pop. very little about the vocal. if you can carry a tune and have a great song, you're golden. adam's material has never quite lived up to expectations. almost. really close. just not quite there So why do you suppose that is? He had 2 months with some of the most successful pop writers and producers available. Is it the actual goal? Is he looking for the wrong audience?? I just listened to Adele on that special and most of the songs on 25 are really good...and they are not all written by her...Max Martin is in there, Ryan Tedder, Bruno Mars team.....I forget but several that have worked with Adam.

Would love to hear your analysis of this JB performance as well, cassie! I didn't expect him to sound mostly in tune and even go up an octave at 2:15. Will check that thread for your reply!

I don't agree that "Adam would kill to have Justin's material". I think it's just that Adam prefers his songs to sound the way that they do. Like he said, his songs are usually about his voice as the focus, and he chose the songs on TOH because he felt that it brought across what he wanted to express, plus he liked them a lot. I wouldn't dare say that Adam would prefer to do songs like What Do You Mean or Sorry or Love Yourself, because those songs are more focused on the music and not the voice. (Put it this way, replace the vocals on those JB songs and those songs are equally catchy.) And perhaps that is one of the many reasons why Bieber's music caters more to the teen demographic (which includes me, but I love all kinds of music so I'm an outlier), because they seem to prefer good electronic dance music tunes. Such as GT, and many many other popular EDM songs out there.

(Oops, I thought I would never say that in my lifetime). What I don't quite get is the fact that several artists with the same or similar production team can have such different success with their music.
