I knew it was tight, but considering gay marriage in Minnesota was voted down, I can understand her being voted in, in such a close race. The gay marriage issue was somewhat close there. Can't win it all. All I can say Obama has a tough job ahead of him, trying to unite the country because at least 49% do not agree with him. We think Adam is a roller coaster ride, we are in for a bumpy ride for the next 4 years. At least I have a president who I can respect. The Minnesota bill wasn't to approve Gay marriage. It was to make the anti gay marriage law they have part of the Minn constitution. The correct vote on this was "No." According to this article, the "No" won. The next step is law suits, like in CA. Of course, if the Supreme Court would just finally finsih the CA cases, none of this would be necessary. So, I am very surprised that a state that elected Obamam & rejected the anti gay constitutional ammendment, did elect Backman! Minnesota voters have rejected a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage. The vote is a major victory for gay rights activists and their allies, who had never won an election on the issue. They also won ballot questions Tuesday on gay rights in Maine and Maryland. It doesn't change things in Minnesota. A state law still makes gay marriage illegal. Supporters of the amendment had said it was necessary to make it tougher for courts or the Legislature to overturn the law. But opponents raised millions to persuade voters it amounted to discrimination.ETA: Tell your husband that the young voters are probably the most informed among us!! My experience is they actually study the issues, whereas older voters go with status quo! Interesting that analyists, last night, said that the Obama voter % rose among women, the young, and minorities. The only category it went down in (not by much) was white men. It went from 43% in 2008 to 40% in 2012. This is just an observation (by me) on aging men that I know, but they seem to have a harder time "changing with the times." Ah that will teach me to be not so well informed. I stand corrected. I have to agree that the young people are most of the time more informed (particularly those who attend institutions of higher learning), and do analyze information provided to them. I have to agree with you on older men. They are not as flexible. I guess as the saying goes "can't teach an old dog new tricks." But I find it extremely interesting that older women are more open to change and are willing to listen to both sides before making a decision.

Thanks for that. My dad, the environmentalist, was bemoaning that Obama is farther right than Richard Nixon. This summed it up for me.

I have watched the older men in my life CHANGE as they grow older. One time very liberal, today they are bemoaning also "Now we will never be able to retire". Too much money talk radio, CNBC, Dennis Prager and Fox news with a little Christian fundamentalism thrown in is what I attribute to their (de)-evolution. It is sad to me.

I don't think Obama is as centrist as Clinton was but he did what he needed to do to get the country moving forward again with as little damage as possible from a fiscal perspective.
It is this which makes me happiest. Just knowing that he will choose the next justices and I can breathe easier. Obama is not a centrist when it comes to social issues; immigration, choice, equality, education and on these issues which are more about quality of life than quantity of rich men's pockets, we dodged a very dangerous (in my opinion) bullet. I look forward to the next four years and I think the Congressional Republicans will see the spine that Obama has shown in foreign policy. It should be good.
