They were actors as singers, not singers as actors. This statement has been true for decades. But in the olden days of movie musicals, they hired real singers to record the vocals so the Hollywood actors could lip synch (famous examples: Deborah Kerr in King and I, Natalie Wood in West Side Story, Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady). More recently, it is not a requirement that stars in musicals actually sing well and are not dubbed over with a real singer (Johnny Depp in Sweeney Todd, etc., never ending). Sadly, I guess many people are happy with mediocre singing if the acting is good. :-/

Actually what is being discussed is how public perception of the person bears no resemblance to their "actual" behavior. Public perception of Miley Cyrus is that she is a slut, yet she has been engaged for 3 years to the same guy but public perception of Taylor is that she is sweet and innocent despite being involved (at whatever level) with many many guys. The general public perception of gay men in the US tends to be that they are promiscuous and deviant so it is quite possible even likely that had Adam had a similar public dating history it would amount to a negative influence on public perception of him even if the media is not specifically nasty about it. There are many people who once they form an initial view of someone never change it or only change after great amounts of contradicting info. People who mainly saw Adam's AMA performance for instance and formed a negative opinion from that are often hard to convince that they are wrong about him. This is actually typical. Quick assessment and generalization are common and can be a useful tool but it is something completely different when you talk about the ability to adjust to new information. Some people are very hide bound and resist change so their opinions are hard to shift, the extreme opposite would those whose opinions change moment to moment. The ideal to me is somewhere in between. Eh, Miley has had her fair share of sluttiness---without a google search, lol, since I don't really care enough, she gave a lap dance to some grown man (can't remember, but I think he was a choreographer), pole danced, took "weird" photos with her father, and has a history of dressing suggestively since she was 16. The media picks on everyone---I just heard a rather nasty (but also kinda funny) joke about Taylor's dating from a radio DJ. Eta----sorry Q3, delete if you want; that's what I get for jumping ahead and not reading everything first. Q3 comment: I am leaving it. Just to end it -- the Taylor Swift conversation is closed.

adamlambert Les Mis: Visually impressive w great Emotional performances. But the score suffered massively with great actors PRETENDING to be singers. adamlambert ...it's an opera. Hollywoods movie musicals treat the singing as the last priority. (Dreamgirls was good) adamlambert Anne Hathaway as Fantine and Enjolras were the exceptions for me. adamlambert Helena B Carter and Sasha B Cohen were great too. adamlambert And I do think it was cool they were singing live- but with that cast, they should have studio recorded and sweetened the vocals. adamlambert Eponine's voice was cool too... adamlambert I felt like I should ignore the vocals and focus on the emotional subtext- but the singing was so distracting at times it pulled me out. adamlambert The industry will say "these actors were so brave to attempt singing this score live"but why not cast actors who could actually sound good? adamlambert Sorry for being so harsh but it's so True! What he says... is reason I don't go to movie musicals much (hardly at all)... saw a good article on this topic on salon.com the other day: www.salon.com/2012/12/26/hollywood_is_ruining_musicals/I made my previous post and then read this article saying the same thing, basically. Thanks for sharing that.

So when do we think Adam saw Les Mis? Okay, since I live in my own fantasy world I'm going to fantasize he ordered it in his hotel room and he and Sauli watched it together. Darn, I bet he missed some parts. ETA: Which begs the question, how could he find the wherewithal to post such a comprehensive review? That man is sooo multi-talented. Okay, I'm putting a stopper in the wine bottle. ETA2: I dreamed a dream in time gone byyyyy. Heh heh. Stopper wouldn't fit.
