GIANT LEAP FOR MOON-KIND: The 2013 VMAs celebrated the show's 30th anniversary and first-ever Brooklyn broadcast by scoring 10.1 million viewers last night, a 66% gain over 2012, and nabbing a 7.8 P12-34 rating (and becoming the #1 entertainment show for the youth demo). The encore presentation (you know, when you thought it was over and then Gaga started singing again) drew another 2.8m viewers, for an evening total of 12.9m. The pre-show ratings jumped 100% over the prior year with 12-34-year-olds and 119% in total viewers (4.6m). The network further reports that MTV's digital properties had their biggest VMA day yet, with 4m+ visitors to MTV.com, mobile web and app properties; meanwhile social activity including 120 trending topics (nationally and globally) and 1.2m likes on Instagram.

THEY CAN'T STOP: Everyone's talking about the Miley Cyrus VMA perf. In fact, everyone's talking about how much people are talking about it. CNET reports that the controversial, sexually overt mash-up of "We Can't Stop" and "Blurred Lines" prompted more than 306k tweets PER MINUTE when it aired and inspired some 4.5 million mentions over the course of the evening. Compare that to 2.9m mentions for Justin Timberlake and 1.9m for Lady Gaga (which is still a helluva lot of mentions). And that's just from the East Coast airing (West Coast data is pending). Then there's the additional "meme" action (#StayStrongBillyRayCyrus, Beetlejuice photoshopped in as Robin Thicke and more). Then consider the iTunes action the star has enjoyed since the shw, with two tracks in the Top 5 and a big lead in album pre-orders (she's now #4 on the album chart). Want a career boost? Getting a "nude" costume and a foam finger is starting to sound like a pretty good strategy.

iTUNES OVER THE MOON: The post-VMA boost is kicking in for several key performers on last night's extravaganza. In addition to her hit "We Can't Stop," which remains at #5, Miley Cyrus' new one, "Wrecking Ball," has jumped to #2 on the iTunes singles chart. Lady Gaga's "Applause" is at #3 following her impressive quick-change show opener; Macklemore's "Same Love" re-enters the Top 10 and shoots to #7 after the award-winning song's stellar VMA rendition; and Drake, who gave the first-ever perf of his new one, is at #10. Of course, Katy Perry couldn't go higher than #1, where she remains, while Robin Thicke and One Direction remain strong at #4 and #15, respectively. On the album side, Bruno Mars hits #5 after the blockbuster "Gorilla" performance (and that song is now a #19 single), but two notable developments are outside the Top 10: Kanye West moving up to #12 and your old pals NSYNC vaulting to #18 with their Greatest Hits. Oh, and the big Q4 albums from Katy and Miley are now both available for pre-order. Thank you, Brooklyn!
