Oh I see, Q3, what you mean about "actors" vs. "actresses." I wasn't thinking of that distinction. I sometimes just give them all the same label in my mind---"actor"---like at the SAG awards.

When Adam uses runs his notes are controlled but there are times when Adam has used runs unnecessarily. People who don't like his voice say he either uses too many runs or screams. Everyone hears things differently. There has been many times when he sings I think he starts off beautifully and than he throws in a wail or run that loses me. When those acoustic trespassing recording were released last week I can't remember which song it was because it was so bad the ending was like listening to someone scratching on chalkboard. I didn't get how everyone thought it was great. That was Aftermath. Yeah, you weren't the only one wincing. There were a few of here saying "nope, can't listen to that again".... it was mainly that he COULD do it all that was so amazing. Not that it's necessarily very pleasant to listen to. On runs, I know it wows audiences and stuff, but personally, I'd like to hear the song's melody at least once before the performer segues into runs and ornamentation. And since Idol performances are limited in length, it means that I tend to prefer if the runs are limited to (1) the climax of the song and (2) the end of the song (if they're not the same thing in a 90 second clip ). I'd really rather NOT hear runs from the very beginning.... Maybe because HCJ's comment about not knowing the melody of the song could be more properly applied to me rather than the contestants - for someone like me whose knowledge is awfully narrow, I really don't recognise very many songs. So getting a gist of the melody first is helpful. You just said what I should have said originally. Too many runs destroys the melody. I've heard songs that are actually unrecognizable until I latch onto a familiar lyric. A little embellishment can make a song beautiful and interesting and unique to the singer, but too much renders it a different song than the composer intended.
