A very tropical Adam concert
-- except for the flannel shirt?!?
12.2.13 by Q3
I have taken a bit of time to think about this concert before I put together this recap. I am still not sure how to explain my experience at this concert. It was both one of the most fun Adam concerts I have ever attended and perhaps the most unusual.
***
I have seem Adam Lambert perform a few times. Some great concerts, and some OK shows. I arrived in Miami Beach not knowing what to expect but certainly did not expect to have an Adam concert laced with vocal improvisation. Frankly, I would have paid twice as much to see Adam just sing whatever he wanted acapella for an hour.
***
The concert was part of the famed Fontainebleau's BleauLive concert series. Now we can add Adam’s name to the list A-List performers who have been part of the series – Lady Gaga, Maroon 5, Katy Perry, Tiesto, Pitbull and others. The concert was scheduled to be on the Lawn Stage but several hours because of the threat of rain, it was moved to the LIV Nightclub – a spectacular venue.
There was a very polite rope line in the grand lobby – and they allowed people to cue up at around 7:00PM. I met linemates from Portugal, Shanghai, Tokyo, Germany and a few other countries. But in a strange coincidence the people in front of me in line were also from Akron, OH – where I currently live.
The audience was quite different than I have seen for many Adam concerts in the past. The line was filled with couples, many men were wearing coats and ties. Others were in casual attire. There were people from 21 to 80 plus a few younger fans who were in the back of the venue.
At 8:00PM we entered the club – and it is stunning in a Miami kind of way. Neon, skyboxes, grand staircases, and big, big security guys. After you enter, there is a long staircase down to the dancefloor and two long rows of skyboxes on either side.
The dancefloor was under a huge domed ceiling. Three bars were strategic located to make getting drinks easy.
There were sofas throughout (the bottle club tables were removed for the concert). The stage was high enough that it did not matter where you were on the dance floor to have a perfect line-of-sight.
One of the best things was because the concert was originally scheduled for a smaller venue, there was plenty of room on the dance floor. A reliable estimate was that there were only about 600 people at this concert. There was certainly not 1,000 people as I was told by the BleauLive staff. I was told and believed that they were very happy and surprised by the number of packages they sold for the concert.
There was a DJ who kept trying to get people to dance but most of the audience just stood looking at the stage and waited. They clearly were not interested in dancing to non-Adam music. After almost an hour and a half of listening to a DJ constantly asking if we were excited to see Adam and other lame questions (thankfully there was an open bar), it was time for Adam.
***
The concert started like many others -- If I Had You, Naked Love, Cuckoo [nice but pretty much like many other concerts). I was enjoying the concert but so far there was no reason to even write a recap.
Then Adam sang “Pop That Lock” and it seemed a bit different, more playful than past concerts.
It all got kicked up a notch when Adam performed “Music Again”. I can’t find a video that does this justice but this one does capture the energy of the moment.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQsAqPkpuTE&feature=share&list=PL2zwzu_g4KVhA5HeniGwV5XTMk4Z3en7c&index=5
One of the high points of the concert was the vocal on “Chokehold”. It is on the end of the above video. By this point Adam seemed to pick up on the spirit of the audience and added a vocal improve to the song.
Most Adam fans knew that the next songs would be “Shout”, WWFM and “Outlaws of Love”. And Adam delivered.
Then he performed a more lengthy vocal improve on “Is This Love?” and was chatty, relaxed and joyful.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbgBMBEWrDg&feature=share&list=PL2zwzu_g4KVhA5HeniGwV5XTMk4Z3en7c&index=2
The next song was a really kicked-up version of “Kickin In” loaded with hip-rolls.
Adam then actually got a bit silly and did a “funny-voice” version of “Fever” followed by a bit of scat improvisation [around 4:00 on the video below]. At this point, I realized that Adam must be as happy as I have ever seen him. At this part, things moved from loose to a bit sloppy – and the backing tapr for “Trespassing” started while Adam was taking a fast break to get a drink. He hopped right in and started singing. The performance of “Trespassing” seemed pretty undistinguished and was driven by a heavy backing tape – until mid-way through Adam hit some crazy note to remind us all that he is vocal insanity.

There was another Adam improve moment and then he checked the set list to see what he was singing next. “Dragon Attack”.
www.youtube.com/watch?v=t7wPUqxDx3g
It was an unusual, really chaotic version of “Dragon Attack” that may be best forgotten except for the fact that Adam’s vocals were very commanding and powerful – just ignore the apparent disconnect between the band and the singer and the sound engineer – the audience was with Adam by this point. They stumbled rolled directly into “Shady” with Band Intros/mini solos. Then left the stage.
The encore followed and Adam performed “Purple Haze” with full rock-attitude. And with that the concert hit the time limit and ended. The set list included one more song, a cover of Lenny Kravitz’ AYGGMY, but it was not performed.
youtu.be/vkVfP6ukwA0
The was not a perfect concert, but it is one of my favorite Adam concerts. Clearly, Adam and the band were not 100% “tight”. And, having recently seen Adam perform with Queen, I am a bit spoiled and his touring band is not in the same league. But by any measure, Adam’s vocal performance in this concert were as good as I have ever heard him – albeit with a lot of playful wandering.
All of the video/audio I have seen so far is from close to the stage. I am hopeful that some video will surface from farther back that was recorded under the dome where the acoustics were amazing. Fingers crossed.
***
Maybe it was the tropical breezes. Maybe it was the wild venue. Maybe it was the positive energy from the audience, but I have never, ever, ever seen Adam this happy. I have never heard him laugh so much on stage.
Maybe it is the fact that he is close to announcing his new record deal (we know it is coming) and whatever else exciting he has set up for 2014. Maybe it is the acceptances and great reviews he has gotten because of Glee.
Maybe it is ruling the stage at the biggest pop music concert in the world (iHeartRadio Music Festival).
Maybe it is that the planets are aligned at the same time.
But the Adam I saw in Miami Beach was confident and joyous. He is as I hoped he would and could be happy and here to entertain us.
I am just so happy to have been able to be there.
***
Why did I label this concert "very Tropical"?
Because it was so f'ing hot. Some seriously adult action on that stage! I give it 3 HOTs.
***
Are these firsts?
- Has Adam ever done a concert wearing a plaid flannel shirts before -- not a radio promo with a song or two, but a full concert?
- Has Adam ever flown home wearing his concert clothes from the night before?

A tease about Adam and 2014
The best albums of 2014
So we were thinking about what should be on our Best Albums Of 2013 list, which we still haven’t finished, and we started wondering would would be on our Best Albums Of 2014 list. Loads of albums that haven’t been released yet, obviously. Some that haven’t even been recorded yet.
So we started making a list, and we got a bit carried away.
(There is a long list of upcoming albums but I only have eyes for this one….)
Adam Lambert
Lambo has recently ‘parted ways with’ his old record label. Something will happen in 2014. We’ve heard some secret things about what’s going on with him and based on what we have heard he should have a really good year.
