Thanks Cassie.. What you had to say is so interesting.. My mom studied opera for years and was the DIVA in a local opera group. I never found opera or all the scales she practiced constantly anything but mind numbing.. Of course I was 11-16 at the time.. Your explanations make me appreciate Adam , my mom and all the dedicated hard working singers.

Youtube suggested I might want to watch this video of the Russian Army choir singing 'Show must go on' so I did! I guess they must have made the connection with me watching the police choir yesterday and an interest in Queen music. BTW I think it's very good! www.youtube.com/watch?v=8fEbMhR_qXk

THIS! Count me IN! ETA: watching The Beatles Tribute reminds me of that intense excitement I felt of first seeing The Beatles on my PawPaw's teeny TV screen on Ed Sullivan Show in 1964 is same as I felt seeing AFL on American Idol in 2009. Guess he brings out the hopeful, romantic teenager that I still am in my heart. wannabethesnake - I nominate this post for the best of the day! Agree with every word with one exception: "I honestly cannot find fault with him and never feel the urge to criticize any of his choices-- not even the jaw-dropping face/crotch thrust and kiss felt round the world!" I would change that to " ESPECIALLY the jaw-dropping..." . THAT performance, the thrust, the kiss were the BEST OF ADAM! Ahead of the times! Made him the international star! YES! You're right! We may be the only ones who don't suffer from PTSD triggered by the memory of the AMA performance. hahaha To this day I consider it a brilliant-hot-mess of entertainment that no one could touch....or stop talking about. Call me weird but I even liked the beautiful defiance of him flipping the bird at the end. I've saved that image and look at it when I'm wishing I had the courage to say "FUCK YOU" to the world. And...did I mention it was HOT????

Before I do get myself banned for impurey thoughts, did ya'll notice I didn't say squat about Adam's anything? Nope, not better than thou or thouest, but I sat myself down. Had a little chat. I've been on a roll about the 'look' for awhile..trying to keep it lite, but I realized that I have become very attached to my way of seeing things. I have spent more energy on someone else's face and hair than I ever have my own and that's a whole lot of energy to expend on someone I don't know. Funny thing about being a fan..a sense of false intimacy with a persona. Not telling anyone how to play in that sandbox, but I have to concentrate on something else. Music would be good. I learn so much about myself being here. Thanks to all for being my fellow teachers! Loved this response, Vivlite! Your realization is a real wake-up call. Concentrating on the MUSIC is the way to go. IT IS SOOOO GOOD!!!!!! His music is GREAT, that's a given in this fandom. I think Adam would be disappointed to learn that his fandom were no longer commenting on his outfits and hair styles. What's the point of playing dress up if no one is noticing?

Count me on team-AFL-can-do-anything-he-wants-and-look-any-way-he-wants. I'll take this gorgeous man however I can get him, and he was absolutely STUNNING last night. I can, also, listen to any song of his a hundred times because he will always make it sound new and fresh and my old ears will quiver like innocent virgins being touched for the first time by his amazing...erm...INSTRUMENT. I honestly cannot find fault with him and never feel the urge to criticize any of his choices--not even the jaw-dropping face/crotch thrust and kiss felt round the world! He FASCINATES me. He can eat crackers in my bed any time sporting a full beard with the frankingump haircut while wearing the Elmo coat and aqua board shorts! Adam had me at "Mama" and I've been on the ride of my life ever since and plan to hang on for every twist and turn to come. That's why I must take a small exception to the sentiment that Adam "got off on the wrong foot and is just now discovering who he is and expressing his true self and now realizes he only needs his voice"....uh...stuff. Adam Lambert has known who he "is" for a very long time. Zodiac Show, anyone? He stormed the most popular television show of his time and made it his BITCH! The Idol tour shoulda been called, "An Evening With Adam Lambert and Friends". The album, "For Your Entertainment", was his biggest seller producing his only radio hits and a Grammy nomination. It, also, produced his only official world wide tour that sold out venues and won him critical acclaim. He has said repeatedly that he was allowed massive freedom while compiling this album in a short period of time and had some of the biggest names in the business working with him. The tour was his baby showcasing his tremendous talent, creativity, and showmanship. IMHO, it was theatrical performance art at it's best. The fun and excitement of the Glam Nation Tour experience and the friends I made at the time will always be some of my best memories. To be honest...I miss the sensual energy and edgy originality of that time period. And, yes, through it all the voice was sublime. It still is. It seems to be even better in fact.
So....to state he is just "now" finding himself does not compute. Is he changing? Apparently. Hell, I'm still changing and growing as a person even at my advanced age. He is still a young man and we have had the privilege of watching him evolve over the last five years. I feel in my bones the best is yet to come. Is it because he is getting better advice and direction? I doubt it. Adam strikes me as a man who knows his own mind and capabilities and is in firm control of his own career and life course. His hair, clothes, acting, and musical choices are all an expression of his drive to create. The fact that they are always changing is what makes him so interesting to follow. He has a tremendous voice and is a wonderful interpreter of songs without a doubt. But, he is so much more than that. He is a performer. He is an entertainer. He is an artist to the core. And HE was--and is--in charge.
YES, to this. You just formulated what I was thinking and trying to say, you just did it so much better. A few things I want to add. Adam knows himself, but I do think that he did not know his market or what that market was needing from him to remain interested. So, he threw his Glam Persona out there and took us on that trip, and everybody who wanted to follow, did. But in contrast to us, who thought that Glam Adam was the 'Glambert-religion' to follow, for Adam this was just one act, expressing one side of him. It was to us fans an astounding experience, how quickly and resolutely he could put the glitter away and develop a new storyline or at least new imagery on a snap. And now we are changing again, and I don't know whether the present phase is an in-between-phase or is in fact the visual image and persona that we will find presented and further developed in A3. But throughout this all, I think that Adam has always been essentially the same, but just like in a photo you only see a snapshot of a person, so is it also with the public persona versus the actual person. The public person is like a snapshot of the real existence. I think that Adam always knew that his voice was his special instrument. He himself said that during FYE, he was kind of vocally showing off. But, I do think that Adam felt that he needed a lot of extra in addition to the voice. And so we got the bombast in person, in his act, in his make-up and clothes and where ever he saw fit. That doing less is also ok, and that showing the more plain and natural side is giving the audience or the fans quite enough, is probably something he had to experience to be comfortable with it. In addition, he is obviously seeing, that there are others, who are now even more interested, folks that perhaps did not GET him, while he was doing the whole Glam thing. I am always a bit weary of folks like that, because if they did not get it then, will they get it next time, when the more flamboyant and gender-bending Adam returns? Will those, who thought that this was just clown's play, wise up next time around? Maybe, maybe not. But I am pretty sure that Adam is not loosing anybody he previously had interested, so he can successfully widen his fan base now and yet still have that solid core that was with him since the start. And then we will find out who stays, when the next change happens. In many ways, I think it was better for Adam that he had a slow ascent and could get settled into his new life of fame and now he can organically build his career, instead of having been shot into mega fame via idol and then have the fear of falling down from those heights. This is a much more solid way, and while I don't think that Adam planned it out that way, I think it was good the way it happened. I don't think Adam did anything wrong by choosing the glam persona first. In fact, had he chosen the more mainstream persona first, there would have been fear in the industry to letting him expand. Now, he has the whole array of options available to him, and can make his choices, as he sees fit. It was long-term smarts over short term wins, and he did not start on the wrong foot, he started by creating a platform to put all his future pairs of boots down. He always wanted longevity and this is exactly what he will have. PERFECT!

Your explanations make me appreciate Adam , my mom and all the dedicated hard working singers. "Mind numbing." Yup, scales are mind numbing to listen to. Folks were talking about the Olympic figure skating competitions. The performances of the long and short numbers are beautiful to me. Do they still actually have to do the "figure" skating? The tracing repeated figure eights or whatever it is? Have you ever watched a skater do that? Like watching paint dry. Mind numbing to be sure. But it teaches technique, control, discipline and precision. The purpose of singing scales is to practice technique, vocal production, control, tone, consistency, transitions between registers, precise pitch, breathing etc. Like tracing figures on ice, shooting 100 free throws daily, or hitting buckets of golf balls at the driving range. Drill and practice. Drill and practice. Until you can do it without thought, in your sleep, while dancing, interacting with an audience, and swinging from a chandelier. Crucial, but very boring for the listener. Especially a teenaged listener.

Not the only. I was busy that night and couldn't watch it until hours later. I did check on line though to see how it went. After I read everything, I was scared to watch. When I finally saw it, I was pleasantly surprised!! I have advised people who have PTSD to watch it again. I tell them they will be pleasantly surprised! And I have absolutely no doubt it is what propelled him into the international consciousness!

Whatever else can be said about today's thread, at least a lot of new and seldom seen folks joined in on both sides of the issue. That's a good thing.
