Mad about Harry! really thought the judges were very good tonight. On the Emily/Harry issue, she had sung the song earlier in the competition and he questioned the lyric appropriateness then, she chose to sing the song again and had not prepared a response to the question she had to know would come again, fail on her part. But, I like her voice and style - one of my favs. It wasn't Emily that sang it in auditions, it was a much younger girl. She was 15 or 16.

Yeah....some of his criticism was on target but I'm not understanding the singling her out on the lyrics. My reaction was ...WTF! But that's just how I feel. It was inexcusable imo and it's what is often called 'slut shaming'. Criticize her performance okay but making her recite innocuous lyrics to embarrass her over the open sexuality of her song was an ugly thing to do. Haley (21) sang House of the Rising Sun and Adam wanted to give us every inch of his love soon after turning 27. At what age did he pass the zone of being forced to then recite the lyrics and be asked if that's what he wants to be singing about (disapproval all over the judge's face)? Harry went from hero to zero for me. The one time I'm glad J Lo was there. EXACTLY!

My apologies, I must have misunderstood what was said during her introduction as I thought they meant she had sung the song earlier, she was clearly aware though what he thought of the song.

I re-watched the singers and I like Emily best. Nice voice, good performance, not afraid and I think she can be made into a current artist. And this was my favorite Adam mentoring...he really got into it with her and they both had fun and she carried that fun to the stage. Looking forward to seeing Adam tomorrow.

I had no trouble with what she sang . She did a great job. Also the ridiculous comment by our country singer about not practicing in a mirror.. I had to practice in a mirror when I did musicals in college.. Is he kidding? Thank you JLO for giving the girl some praise. Practicing in front of a mirror was one of the things that I thought Adam might have suggested to her that the judges put down. I remember Adam talking about how he practiced in front of a mirror to get it just perfect - don't remember where that was from.

Didn't hear Adam tell her to use a mirror, she said she would practice in front of a mirror. I guess dancers should remove all mirrors from their dance studios too.IMHO, one of the dumbest remarks on that show.

On the one hand, I can understand HCJ's opinion that the contestants should not be singing about topics they really don't know about. But then I think about how much I want to hear Adam sing that song about going down on a women that Nile and Avicii wrote and wanted Adam to sing. Adam said it wasn't for him, but he would sing it "for the people". A really good actor can play charactors that are totally different then they are. So why can't a singer do the same with song. Ok course that person would have to be a really good actor in addition to a good singer to be convincing. I thought Emily pulled it off (the acting part) fairly well and the vocals were really good too.

Since Idol only shows about 5% of the mentoring session, we really don't know if Adam said something about practicing in front of mirrors first, or if it was totally her idea. But it sounds to me like something Adam would have said. But yes, dumbest remark all evening. It is a performance!

I took the "practice in front of the mirror" in a different light than y'all did. To me, he was saying that if you have to practice in front of a mirror in order to fake the feeling of the song, if it doesn't come naturally from within, then it may be the wrong song for you. Adam has said that he had to be able to feel the song he was performing, and if he couldn't he wouldn't choose to sing it.
Yes, actors sometimes have to recite lines or sing songs they don't relate to naturally. It can be done. But, why add that layer of difficulty when there are so many songs these kids could relate to?
I did not think he was telling her that practicing in front of a mirror was a bad idea, period. I think he was specifically focused on her being authentic to herself. That seems to be a recurring theme at Idol. Being true to yourself (yet being what the audience wants to vote for).

No I think you're right. Emily told Randy that she sang the song before and Harry questioned her about the appropriateness of the song's lyrics because she was 17 that time. She just became 18, so Harry said that now she's 18 guess it's okay for her to sing the song. However I agree with Ryan that Harry's too much in his Daddy's mode.
I think she did it great and Adam's right the song only work if she gave a touch of rock element to the song. It didn't mean that she was pretending to be a rocker.
