I took the "practice in front of the mirror" in a different light than y'all did. To me, he was saying that if you have to practice in front of a mirror in order to fake the feeling of the song, if it doesn't come naturally from within, then it may be the wrong song for you. Adam has said that he had to be able to feel the song he was performing, and if he couldn't he wouldn't choose to sing it. Yes, actors sometimes have to recite lines or sing songs they don't relate to naturally. It can be done. But, why add that layer of difficulty when there are so many songs these kids could relate to? I did not think he was telling her that practicing in front of a mirror was a bad idea, period. I think he was specifically focused on her being authentic to herself. That seems to be a recurring theme at Idol. Being true to yourself (yet being what the audience wants to vote for). Mirror use IMHO,I think she was trying to act out the words by being expressive and saucy. Thank goodness she didn't emotionally feel the words, Harry would have had to see one of Idol's spiritual advisors. I mean it was a Fun song, "it's not that deep" ,to quote a favorite artist of mine

So.. about this mentoring and coaching this week. I'm pretty sure that Randy got paid for this workshop. I'm wondering if Idol also pay Chris and Adam to spend the whole two days out of their busy schedule to be there. Especially Adam had to work on his birthday.. LOL.

Why would they not have been?

Exactly how I feel ..She felt empowered and wasn't about to let Harry intimidate her. Good on her. I had no trouble with what she sang . She did a great job. Also the ridiculous comment by our country singer about not practicing in a mirror.. I had to practice in a mirror when I did musicals in college.. Is he kidding? Thank you JLO for giving the girl some praise. Practicing in front of a mirror was one of the things that I thought Adam might have suggested to her that the judges put down. I remember Adam talking about how he practiced in front of a mirror to get it just perfect - don't remember where that was from. Yes, Adam did exactly that. And I have read similar things from may other singers. Madonna sang into her hairbrush in front of the mirror too. *** I used to love Idol but found tonight's show very choppy and not very entertaining. I thought Adam was great (duh!) and Chris was also good. Randy was -- well -- Randy! I was less impressed with the contestants. And where was that chemistry between the judges I keep reading about? Except for the fact that Keith and Harry hugged there was very little interaction. New set looks cool. And I do like the Boot Camp Idea but wish there was more about the performances and the coaching, like on the mentoring shows. But there is a ton of good stuff that we never got to see. Some of the judges comments also made little sense to me -- a singer sings with a 12 note range and they go all wow about her range. And what was that stuff about high notes being like triple jumps?!?! Criticizing a singer for selecting a song from the Idol songlist that was not appropriate is ridiculous. If it is not appropriate, why is it on the songlist? And why shouldn't a young women sing about being in control and making choices? And the question about the lyrics to "Paint It Black" and what they mean -- I want to hear HCJ's answer. The meaning of "Paint It Black" has been discussed and debated for decades with no resolution. Any diehard Stones fan knows that "Paint It Black" has never been explained beyond it was written when the Stones were tripping. It may not be about death, depression or anything related. The literal meaning is that it is about a man whose lover has died, and is beside himself with grief, seeing his whole world “painted black.” He even wants the sun “blotted out.” He’s depressed, feeling down, worthless, and without direction or connection. It has surprisingly complex lyrics for a mid-60's hit song. Mick got the cool line "I turn my head until my darkness goes" from James Joyce's Ulysses. "Paint It Black" I see a red door and I want it painted black No colors anymore I want them to turn black I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes I have to turn my head until my darkness goes
I see a line of cars and they’re all painted black With flowers and my love, both never to come back I see people turn their heads and quickly look away Like a newborn baby it just happens ev’ryday
I look inside myself and see my heart is black I see my red door and it has been painted black Maybe then I’ll fade away and not have to face the facts It’s not easy facing up when your whole world is black
No more will my green sea go turn a deeper blue I could not forsee this thing happening to you If I look hard enough into the setting sun My love will laugh with me before the morning comes
I see a red door and I want it painted black No colors anymore I want them to turn black I see the girls walk by dressed in their summer clothes I have to turn my head until my darkness goes Hmm, hmm, hmm…
I wanna see it painted black, painted black Black as night, black as coal I wanna see the sun, blotted out from the sky I wanna see it painted, painted, painted, painted black Yeah
Keith Richard said the song was written as a joke. Mick stated that "Paint It Black" means "Paint It Black." "Paint It Black was just going to be like a beat group number. If you'd been at the session it was like one big joke. We put Bill on piano and Bill plays in this funny style. He goes bi-jing, bi-jing, bi-jing, and all that sort of stuff and we went running about going bi-jing, bi-jing, bi-jing and that's how it all started. It was just one big joke. It was in Los Angeles. And we just stuck the sitar on because some geezer came in. He was in a jazz group playing sitar in his pyjamas. And we said Oh, that'll sound good because it's got this thing that goes "g-doing, doing, doing", etc." - Mick Jagger, 1966 The Stone never took themselves so seriously that they felt everything needed to have deep meaning or be earth-changing. Perhaps that is why there music was so much fun. I really like the RS 1995 interview with Mick because he was so frank. Here's a bit... WENNER: What do you think about “Satanic Majesties” now? JAGGER: Well, it’s not very good. It had interesting things on it, but I don’t think any of the songs are very good. It’s a bit like “Between the Buttons.” It’s a sound experience, really, rather than a song experience. There’s two good songs on it: “She’s a Rainbow,” which we didn’t do on the last tour, although we almost did, and “2000 Light Years From Home,” which we did do. The rest of them are nonsense. WENNER: I listened to it recently, and it sounds like “Spinal Tap.” JAGGER: Really, I know. Link: www.jannswenner.com/Archives/Jagger_Remembers.aspxBack to Idol -- So Harry, if Mick and Keith do see the need to explain the meaning of PIB, how do you expect an 18 year old girl to do it. Have you ever seen Mick perform it? Do you actually understand it is only rock 'n roll -- but I like it.

HCJr understands singing and song interpretation, but he does not get performance art, for the life of him, imo. I think he is actually scared of it. Probably would not like Madonna practicing with hair brushes either. Anyone want to bet what he thought of Adam doing RoF? I thought that tonight he dissed every contestant that Adam had coached.
As much as I appreciate the musical knowledge and astuteness that he brings to the table when it comes to vocals, he sunk in my opinion big time today. He was not only conservative, this was just bone-headed. If idol is about finding a current pop artist, then they need to sing lyrics that are current or could be. Or is this show to be seen as utterly removed from the 'reality' it is pretending to be about? No need to answer this.... I know, I know.
Agree with most of what you guys already said. I thought that the Adam soundbites were so shortened that it is kind of hard to know what he said to each of the contestant. Chris got more of a chance to make complete statements, and he handled his coaching well. I am sure, so did Adam, just would have liked to hear it too. There was only one segment where he got to expand a bit. Hope, that Adam gets a bit more screen time tomorrow.
