83 days to go…to QAL!!
3.28.14 by Q3
There are 83 days until Chicago…and the question I have been thinking about is what will Adam sing on this tour?
Assuming they change out a few songs during the tour, and do 22 – 24 unique songs a night (excluding the guitar and drum solos), there could be around 30 songs performed in these concerts. And hopefully, I get a lot of them in my countdown. But that won’t be easy -- the Queen catalog is so big, the potential cover list is almost a universe, and there is a chance that they could also decide to perform an Adam song.
#83 “In The Lap Of The Gods” (also known as “In The Lap Of The Gods…Revisited”)
Written by Freddie Mercury.
Released November 8, 1974 on “Sheer Heart Attack”
"In The Lap Of The Gods" was, according to Freddie Mercury, the “direct prelude” to "Bohemian Rhapsody" and the A Night at the Opera album in general. It is built in three parts:
1. The introduction, which contains fast piano arpeggios, very high-toned falsettos by Taylor plus vocals harmonies.
2. The second part which is a slow love song, featuring slowed-down vocals by Mercury
3. The third part, based on vocals harmonies singing "leave it In The Lap Of The Gods", with more falsettos by Taylor. Those high notes were thought to be made using synthesizers, and to prove they were not, Taylor would reproduce them in live performance every night.
Throughout the entire song, wind effects can be heard.
Queen performed this song almost 300 times from 1974 until their last concert with Freddie at Knebworth Park, Knebworth, England on August 9, 1986 in front of 125.000 people..
I think this song belongs in the Queen + Adam Lambert setlist. I think Adam should sing this song. (And we know Adam is partial to a song with repetition and a shuffle beat!)
My first video of “In The Lap Of The Gods” is a composite video, the audio is from the August 12, 1974 Hague, Holland concert, the video is from the November 20, 1974 performance at the Rainbow.
This is how I remember this song. The existence of this audio is a testimony to the care and diligence of Queen fans at archiving and searching for performance records, then sharing their finds.

Description: A HUGE THANKS TO THE GUYS ON QUEENZONE.COM FOR THIS FIND!
For many years it was rumoured that an audience tape from Queen's first show in Holland was out there, and its existence was confirmed in November 2011 when an mp3 sample was posted a Dutch website on the 20th anniversary of Freddie Mercury's death. A few months later, it was promised that a silver disc of the recording from The Hague would be given to everyone who attended the 2012 Dutch Queen fan convention. Only one side of a 90 minute cassette reportedly exists.
This monumental release had a couple slight flaws, which are fixed here. The tape played a bit too fast, and there were slight gaps between the tracks. Thankfully the creators of the disc left Procession and Now I'm Here as a single track, as well as the medley, which made the job much easier than it could've been.
It's possible that the recording was transferred to mini-disc at some point, as a spectral analysis reveals slight inconsistencies after 16 kHz.
Thanks to everyone involved in unearthing this historic recording.
“In The Lap Of The Gods” composition
Composer: Freddie Mercury
Album: Sheer Heart Attack, 12th track
Key: D Major
Meter: 3/4, shuffle beat
Form:
Verse | Chorus |
Verse'| Chorus | Chorus | Chorus |
| Chorus | Chorus | Chorus |
Many think that this song could have been a successful single because it's catchy (and repetitive) enough. Sheer Heart Attack was the album where Mercury explored his talent for popular songwriting, including his experiments with shuffle beat ("Killer Queen" and this song).
The form starts cyclic (ballad form) and ends with long repetitions (six times in a row) of the singalong chorus. Major influences for the latter must be "Hey Jude" (Beatles) and "All The Young Dudes" (Mott The Hopple), and also "Father To Son" from the previous album. Queen never again wrote a repetitive song like this. For the live versions they shortened the ending to only 3-4 choruses.
The only twist in the simple form is the ambiguity of where do the title phrase belong. Some choices:
1) to the end of the Verse: it sounds so at the Verse-chorus transitions.
2) to the beginning of the chorus:
pro: the closing sequence of choruses suggests that this phrase belongs to the chorus. The absence of this phrase at the end of both first and last choruses suggests that it does not belong to the END of the chorus.
The guitar motif at its end is paralleled in the "wo-wo-wo-la-la-la" phrase.
3) to the end of the chorus: the "wo-wo-wo" phrase starting on the downbeat has a very strong "beginning of the chorus" feel.
In my interpretation the title phrase belongs to both Verse and the end of the Chorus.
The Verses are arranged for piano as main instrument while the choruses are dominated by guitars and more intense drum work. This formula was used also in Brian May's power ballads on the Game album. The Wembley version is arranged for guitar throughout with a brief intro. Earlier live versions feature piano intro.
The D-Major tonality is clear throughout with the ii chord getting much emphasis by getting preceded by secondary dominants and the way how the chorus opens with Em. My quest for musical cross-references with the other "In The Lap Of The Gods" from the same album was without result.

“In The Lap Of The Gods”
Words and music by Freddie Mercury
Aaah, ooh, ooh, ah, ooh, ah
Leave it In the lap of the Gods
I live my life for you
Think all my thoughts with you, and only you
Anything you ask I do, for you
I touch your lips with mine
But in the end
I leave it to the lords
Leave it In the lap of the Gods
What more can I do ?
Leave it In the lap of the Gods
I leave it to you
Leave it In the lap of the Gods
Leave it In the lap of the Gods
I want you to, aah
Leave it In the lap of the Gods
Leave it In the lap of the Gods, aah
Leave it In the lap of the Gods

There are many lyrics variations, here is one.
It's so easy, but I can't do it
So risky - But I gotta chance it
It's so funny, there's nothing to laugh about
My money, that's all you wanna talk about
I can see what you want me to be
But I'm no fool
It's in the lap of the Gods
I can see what you want me to be
But I'm no fool
No beginning, there's no ending
There's no meaning in my pretending
Believe me, life goes on and on and on
Forgive me when I ask you where do I belong
You say I can't set you free from me
But that's not true
It's In the lap of the Gods
I can see what you want me to be
But I'm no fool
It's In the lap of the Gods
Wo wo la la la wo
Wo wo la la
Wah wah ooh

What If You Have An Extra Ticket or Two?
As long as you are willing to sell your ticket to a member for what you paid for it, you can post any "for sale" tickets in the Members Only section in the concert thread for the event.
A couple suggestions:
1. If you have a Ticketmaster ticket, you can transfer it on Ticketmaster for most concerts (not Auburn Hills, MI)
2. If you purchased a VIP Fan Package, the merchandise will be shipped to the purchaser’s address. If you wish to give this to the buyer with the ticket, remember you will need to mail it.
