"Popular music" performers cited as important to postmodern music Bad Religion (O'Reilly 1994) David Bowie (Berger 2003, 8) Michael Jackson (Berger 2003, 8) Madonna (Berger 2003, 8) Talking Heads (Smart 1993, 14) Frank Zappa (Gagné 2012, 305) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Postmodern_musicI guess in this context I can understand what he means by postmodern, the entire article is helpful I am pretty sure that this is not exactly what Adam means. Just my impression -- but I think he is using a more contemporary definition of the term. "Postmodern music is a genre of music characterized by a disregard for formal rules and an emphasis on creativity." That is different than music from the post-modern period (as listed above).

I have to agree. The article goes on to state Postmodern music is not a distinct musical style, but rather refers to music of the postmodern era. The terms "postmodern", "postmodernism", "postmodernist", and "postmodernity" are exasperating terms (Bertens 1995, 3). Indeed, postmodernists question the tight definitions and categories of academic disciplines, which they regard simply as the remnants of modernity (Rosenau 1992, 6–7). With that definition or explanation Adam could mean anything!

In many ways, FYE was a post-modern album. It just means it refuses to be boxed in by genre rules or expectations...by track and by its entirety. It is a recognition that it is impossible to 'fit' a genre anyways, and why would you want to. The modern era was all about organization and categorization...and then perfecting each. Post modernization is about blurring the lines, being comfortable with those ambiguous lines, taking the best of multiple genres and creating something unique.
I would say that Avicii's True is a post modern creation, albeit there is still one over-riding genre ruling it, he is at least trying to combine quite unique elements and changing them completely...ignoring prior rules of engagement.
I think we are in for a really interesting and unique album!!! YEAH!!
JUST MY TAKE.....

Indeed, postmodernists question the tight definitions and categories of academic disciplines, which they regard simply as the remnants of modernity (Rosenau 1992, 6–7). With that definition or explanation Adam could mean anything! Popping in to see what y'all are making of the postmodern tease. I had to laugh a little at that tweet, because based on my limited but vaguely informed sense of the term (I--reluctantly--studied postmodern lit in grad school, not that I understood it) Adam cocked it up as soon as he included "postmodern" and "honest" in the same tweet. (Although some postmodern scholar could probably have a field day examining that particular juxtaposition in the ultra-public, ultra dissociated, acontextual medium of twitter (don't worry, I don't really know what that means either )). As far as I understand it, postmodernism basically undercut all hope of meaningful honesty altogether! It identified so many layers of performance and so little control over meaning and had so little faith in absolute truth in any case that I'm not sure honesty meant much of anything by the time those guys got done with it, lol. But I'm kidding around, mostly. I'm thinking maybe part of what Adam meant by postmodern is that the postmodern approach was characterized in part by borrowing, sometimes ironically, from lots of different genres and time periods (e.g. "genre is irrelevant.") We know Adam loves to do that. Adam's not believing in boxes is a thoroughly postmodern instinct! In any case, postmodern or not, I can't wait to see what the man has in store for us! Bring it on, bud. ETA: Um, yeah, what Mszue said, lol! (Hi, Lady! I was waiting for you to pop your head in on this prompt!)

I have:
MTN, Roar, Into The Grove, IBIATCL, Barracuda, Gloria, The Happening, Hold On, and Rock Star. (I purposely left out What The Fox Said..or whatever it's called...I just couldn't, even for Adam, DL that song!)

UMMM thanks back midwifes pal....am I that predictable lol!!
pomo gets a bad rap though...cynicism may be part of it for some, but that is not the core. Most of our best art and film are made with pomo sensibilities today. Every time you watch a film or read a book that floats with multiple narrators or mixes times and/or generations; anytime a book or film consciously breaks the fourth wall without a designated character [like voice over or MC..those are not pomo]. Art that uses mixed materials to add layers of meaning. Performance art s 'art' over performance.....architecture where form rules over or alters purpose....yada yada yada....I now desist...haha
