Happy Cinco de Mayo!
5.5.14 by Q3
Today is Cinco de Mayo (Spanish for "fifth of May"). In the US, parts of Mexico and in isolated places around the world it is a day to celebrate Mexican cuisine and drinks, culture and music. In the state of Puebla, Mexico the holiday is called El Día de la Batalla de Puebla (The Day of the Battle of Puebla) and is the holiday has a very different meaning.
Cinco de Mayo originated in Mexican-American communities in the American West as a way to commemorate the cause of freedom and democracy during the first years of the American Civil War, and today the date is observed in the United States as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride.
In the state of Puebla, the date is observed to commemorate the Mexican army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín. Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico's Independence Day—the most important national patriotic holiday in Mexico—which is celebrated on September 16.
Like most holidays that involve music, drinking and partying, Cinco de Mayo is spreading around the world. From Tokio, Japón (Tokyo, Japan)!

January 19, 2014, NBC announced that their next live musical would be “Peter Pan”. Here is part of their press release:
On the heels of the very successful airing of “The Sound of Music Live!” in December, NBC Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt announced today that the network will present a new television production of the classic musical “Peter Pan” as a live telecast on Thursday, Dec. 4, 2014.
Multi-award-winning producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, who produced “The Sound of Music Live!” will again executive produce the production. Casting is currently on a fast track.
….
The original Broadway production of “Peter Pan,” directed and choreographed by Jerome Robbins and featuring the iconic songs “I’m Flying,” “I’ve Gotta Crow,” “I Won’t Grow Up,” and “Never Never Land,” opened on Broadway in 1954. The show had a book by J.M. Barrie and a score by Mark “Moose” Charlap & Carolyn Lee, with additional songs by Jule Styne & Betty Comden and Adolph Green.
It starred Mary Martin as Peter and Cyril Richard as Captain Hook, both of whom won Tony Awards for their performances.
Though business was strong, the show closed in 1955 to make way for the live broadcast on NBC, with an audience of 65 million viewers — the highest rating for a single night program at the time. NBC later broadcast the show live again in 1956 and 1960, all to strong ratings. It was also the first broadcast of a musical in color. None of NBC’s telecasts took place in a theater in front of a live audience; they all were broadcast from NBC studios.
The story of “Peter Pan” is one of eternal youth, companionship and enduring loyalty. A mischievous boy who can fly and doesn’t age, Peter grew up without parents and spends his never-ending childhood on the enchanted island of Never Land where he is the leader of the Lost Boys. With the fairy Tinker Bell always at his side, he brings Wendy Darling and her brothers to Never Land on the biggest adventure of their lives and they encounter mermaids, fairies, pirates, and a dastardly villain named Captain Hook.

According to Buzz Feed (January 24, 2014), “No casting decisions have been announced, though it is rumored that NBC is looking for a male lead.” Well, at least they are headed in the right direction. Many names have been tossed around but no cast decisions have been announced. So will they pick a man for Peter Pan? Well if they stick with this plan, I have just the right man for the role!
In 1954, “Peter Pan” hit Broadway with Mary Martin as Peter Pan. This started the tradition that the part should be played by a woman. So the 1979 Broadway revival starred Sandy Duncan and the 1990 Broadway re-revival starred Cathy Rigby. According to Wikipedia Jack Noseworthy is the only male actor to have played Peter Pan on Broadway; he was an understudy in the revue Jerome Robbins' Broadway (1989) which included the song “I'm Flying” from Peter Pan. (When I was young, I never understood why this part was played by a woman. I still do not get it.)
Now, finally, it looks like the part of Peter Pan will be played by a man. I think it should be Adam and here’s why!
1. Adam fits the part.
In the original play, there are no casting notes. www.gutenberg.net.au/ebooks03/0300081h.html
When it was turned into a musical, the part of Peter Pan was described as….
• Androgynous youth, pre-adolescent but with an ageless quality.
• Strong, good looking features. Can be played by a small male or female, slim.
• Pref. max height 5’5” (1.63metres).
• Vocally strong belt voice, (female – mezzo soprano / male – high tenor)
• Athletic, strong, nimble dancer, stage fighting skills required and not afraid of flying.
• Possible aerial acrobatics using harness and wires.
OK Adam is too tall and he is not a pre-adolescent but IMO he has an ageless quality; he has strong, good looking features; is a high tenor; is athletic, strong, a nimble-dancer; can certainly do stage fighting; is not afraid of flying; and can do a ninja roll!
BTW Mary Martin was 41 when she debuted as Peter Pan on Broadway and 48 years old in 1960 when she starred in the TV movie.
2. The part requires someone who is a theatrical singer. Peter sings a lot of songs, some which require comedic interpretation or they will not be effective.
Song | Performed by | Music and lyrics by |
"I've Gotta Crow" | Peter Pan | Moose Charlap, Carolyn Leigh |
"Never Never Land" | Peter Pan | Jule Styne, Comden and Green |
"I'm Flying" | Peter Pan, Wendy, John, Michael | Moose Charlap, Carolyn Leigh |
"Wendy" | Peter Pan and Lost Boys | Jule Styne, Comden and Green |
"I Won't Grow Up" | Peter Pan, Slightly, Curly, Twins and Lost Boys | Moose Charlap, Carolyn Leigh |
"Oh, My Mysterious Lady" | Peter Pan and Captain Hook | Jule Styne, Comden and Green |
"Ugg-a-Wugg" | Peter Pan, Tiger Lily, Children and Indians | Jule Styne, Comden and Green |
"Distant Melody" | Peter Pan | Jule Styne, Comden and Green |
"Reprise: I Gotta Crow" | Peter Pan, Company | Moose Charlap, Carolyn Leigh |
"Finale: Never Never Land" | Peter Pan | Jule Styne, Comden and Green |
And, the song “Never Never Land” deserved to be sung beautifully. No doubt Adam can do that.

3. He has a lot of music theater experience and he has done a lot of live TV and he can pull it off!
31.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_kqptfgepV11qzkclao1_500.jpg
4. Adam already knows the show!
youtu.be/BtY5QEyziNw
As his early theater career progressed, Adam went on to play Peter Pan and Captain Hook. My bet is he already knows the lyrics.
5. He looks a lot like Peter Pan – even the Disney version!
6. He can nail that mischievous glint in the eye look.
7. Adam could make you believe that you can fly! Perhaps he already has!!
And admit it, you are dying to see Adam fly! I know I am!!
8. Peter Pan like Fairies!! So does Adam!
9. Adam looks great in tights!
10. Nobody looks better in GREEN!! Nobody!

The 2014 "Part-of-the-World" Queen + Adam Lambert Tour Countdown!
5.5.14 by Q3
The countdown moves on and the start of this epic tour gets closer. Only 45 days to go!
#45 “If You Can't Beat Them” (1978)
Written by John Deacon.
Released on Jazz on November 10, 1978.
This is one of Queen’s hard rock songs and it was a live favorite in late 1970s in part because it is a fun, upbeat song, and in part because it contains a great showcase guitar solo. Even the recorded version has a guitar solo of over two minutes, making it one of the longest guitar solos in a Queen recording. It is also one of the few songs written by John where Brian plays all the guitars.
I do not expect to see this song on the setlist but I think it is a song that could be updated a bit and would be interesting to see them bring back. It is one of the songs that represents the heavier rock Queen songs that were particularly popular in the US. Plus, I would really like to hear Adam’s take on this song because there is a lot of room for vocal improvisation.
Personnel
Musicians:
Freddie Mercury - lead and backing vocals
Brian May - guitars, backing vocals
John Deacon - bass guitar
Roger Taylor - drums, backing vocals
Produced by: Queen and Roy Thomas Baker

“If You Can't Beat Them” Lyrics
youtu.be/usa0njwsdpw
If You Can't Beat Them
Keep your chin up when you're feeling lonely
Don't let them get you down
Ain't no use in your sitting all alone
Hanging around for someone to call
Oooh they won't come knocking at all
Don't run and hide
Even if it hurts you inside
So I said
Give as good as you get
If you can't beat them, join them
You'd better do it
Because it makes you feel good
If you can't beat them, join them
You're never gonna help yourself
Come on
Get up
You're feeling good
Keep your fingers off my money
Don't try and pull me down
You're taking me out to wine and dine me
Trying to wind me round and around
Invite me to your little contract Ha! Ha!
Rumour has it that you could play dirty
I'll tell you what I'll do about that
I'm playing at the wrong game yeah!
If you can't beat them, join them
You'd better do it
Because it makes you feel good
If you can't beat them, join them
You're never gonna help yourself
If you can't beat them, join them
You'd better do it
Because it makes you feel good
If you can't beat them, join them
It's everyone for themselves
Move on out
