Ok, time for the True Confession..
~ by Michael English
None of this would have happened had it not been for the fact that my mother is a particularly active and enthusiastic part of Adam Lambert's "Glamily" - and offered to source me a ticket for the concert as a birthday present. She's on Twitter. I mean, like, ON Twitter. There are tickets.. And while there was at first a certain amount of chagrin, on my part, to admit that "my mom" contributes to several fan-sites and pages (including running the Official Adam Lambert Fan Club right here on FB), I have to admit to being entirely overwhelmed by this short, but intense experience.
There is a whole phenomenon - and it truly is a phenomenon - of Adam Lambert fans who are, each in their own unique ways, 'coming out' as their true selves - and yes, they are largely 'middle-aged' women, at least the ones I've met - and they are each inspired by the shameless individuality that AL embodies and expresses in his work, and in his Life. (And anyway, have you heard the guy sing?? Blam!!) They are themselves in a process of reclaiming their True Selves. They are finding the courage to appear before the world in their full and unique regalia, celebrating their uniqueness and, through the music, have found a community of Spirit together.
A moment ago a distant friend on FB posted to his status update:
"Sympathetic Resonance: a harmonic phenomenon wherein a formerly passive string or vibratory body responds to external vibrations to which it has a harmonic likeness." Indeed. #nocoincidences #thanksDuane
There is something powerful and direct about music - and its ability to strike a chord of memory - days, even years later. Having spent several hours before and after each of the shows visiting with Mom, and with different Glamily members, and hearing their stories, their enthusiasm for the music and the courage and empowerment it has brought to them, while simultaneously being confronted with my own 'hopes and fears and terrors' that have been buried behind walls of time and which the music somehow brings direct and immediate access to, I am truly overwhelmed, and have spent most of my last day here in Las Vegas simply sitting in the lovely chaise in the amazing window of this gorgeous room - (with no small thanks to the VIP Staff of the hotel for setting up "Bren's" kid..on a dancer's last-minute selloff budget) writing notes in an attempt to capture all of the distinct and inter-related threads of thought these conversations have brought to light.
In a curious way, I think Adam Lambert represents, at least in part, an aspect of what Feminism (to my mind) hopes to achieve - which is not only that women are entirely capable of being strong, and of being empowered in their strength, but also that men could - would - be able to admit, accept, embrace, and celebrate their uniqueness, their softness, their BEAUTY - their individuality - and the fragile and singular sense of True Self that each of us possesses, and which is the miraculous truth of human existence.
Cue the Thomas Dolby 12" dub remix (Dissidents, the Search for Truth)
Cue the Martha Graham quote: "There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost."
Cue the dance.
Honour your truth. Celebrate the unique resonance of your being. Those who share harmonic likeness will respond. You will find each other.
All of this, "coming to me live" in the midst of the Las Vegas Hard Rock Hotel - which is nearly and particularly the polar opposite a manifestation of ideals in time and place... Curious days.
Home tomorrow. Much writing still to do.
