What I noticed was Adam called AI "the f**king show". A departure from his usual way of talking about Idol. Yeah that too. I wonder if that was an off the record comment?

Yes, the south had a strangkehold on Idol winners or finalists. However, David Cook is not from Texas. He is from Kansas City, Missouri. I am pretty sure OK (Carrie's home) and MO do not qualify as south. Amd of course, AZ for Jordin. Other non southerner is Lee. So, 10 of 13 winners from the south! ETA: meant to mention that I do remember Neil's blog when he said Adam wanted to win. But as far as Adam saying it, this new interview is the first time! OK and Missouri are both Southern states. Missouri was admitted to the Union as part of the Missouri Compromise as a "slave state" in 1820 -- the parallel free state was Maine. Arizona (the Arizona Territory at the time) also supported the Confederacy and aligns with the South. Texas was part of the Confederacy and Texas declared its secession from the United States on February 1, 1861, and joined the Confederate States of America on March 2, 1861. The only Idol winner not from a state that seceded from the US (ie "the South") or supported the South is Lee DeWyze who is from Illinois who beat someone from Ohio. No Southerner in AI 9 final battle. And no Southerner has lost to a non-Southerner in the final -- ever. Adam could never have won -- Arkansas HeWhoCannot ameds California. All about geography.

Gokey's votes went to Kris; Adam became the runner-up. I think the Lambert family knew once Allison was dumped that the outcome was pretty predictable. Adam has always been extremely gracious in defeat and continues to thank Idol for helping to launch his career. It's one of many traits that I admire in the man.

My take on Adam's comment about idol is that while he will always be grateful to the show - and he isn't bitter about the result and never had any issue moving forward - there is also maybe some measure of vindication for him with his ever-increasing success. I think he knew what he was up against (historical voting patterns, demographics, prejudice)but that he did all he could do in his power to win and is at peace with the outcome. Nothing against Kris (nice guy but not my personal taste) but winning Idol over Adam is the probably the worst thing that could have happened to him. The more Adam's fame and recognition grows the more Kris becomes kind of a punchline to a joke (as one QAL review put it) "just a footnote in Wikipedia". In fact, one of my favorite comments ever was someone on twitter saying about Adam (during the 1st QAL tour in 2012 maybe?)"this guy came in second - who won? Jesus Christ?" That kind of makes it a really hollow victory for Kris knowing there are so many folks out there thinking he didn't deserve it and it isn't going to get any better as Adam's star just gets brighter.
I think the argument can also be made that this outcome in the vote was kind of the beginning of the downward slide for Idol as well. Media coverage was really harsh about it and think the show began to lose credibility as well as interest. There are other issues with the show (questionable judges behavior, the WGWG's winning every year) but I think this may have been the tipping point or when it "jumped the shark".
