Oh, I see that Q3 is getting her kicks by torturing us today. Only 5 songs-- really????? Okay, here goes: Imagine- John LennonI think hands-down the most beautiful song. And in all its understatement, deeply challenging to the listener. I harshly judge anyone who sanitizes/edits the lyrics and leaves out the "imagine there's no heaven" part. Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds- The BeatlesThe Beatles have a zillion great songs, but the psychedelic imagery in this song is pure poetry. Chimes of Freedom- Bob DylanTimeless and universal. Hallelujah- Leonard CohenBrilliant song, and of course credit goes to the songwriter, but it's been covered better by others. Buckley and k.d. lang's versions are amazing. Where The Streets Have No Name- U2So powerful! Hmmm, I guess for me, lyrics are paramount. It's amusing in terms of our discussions of cheesy lyrics that you have that particular U2 song on your list and say that lyrics are paramount because Bono literally cringes over that song and believes that the opening lines of it are the cheesiest thing he's ever written while the rest of the band totally disagrees. But all of the band insist that the entire embodiment of that song exists in the first 16 bars before a word is even sung. That intro is the heart from which the entire song was created and it took them months to develope the rest of the song in a way that they felt did not loose that emotion and feeling. They spent so much time on it in fact that Eno (producer) at one point tried to erase the track so that they would stop wasting time on it. It has become one of the band's most important songs and they once turned down 23 million dollars offered by a car company to use it in a commercial.

"So your girlfriend rolls a Honda, playing work out tapes my Fonda...well Fonda ain't got a motor in the back of her Honda! My anaconda don't want none unless you got buns hon!" And THAT is why Baby Got Back needs to be on this list. I will tirelessly lobby for the inclusion of this great American masterpiece of lyrical brilliance. Well, don't forget "Reverse Cowgirl" by T-Pain. I'm sure we'll be humming that one for years. ;D

Here is my list. I really can't pick 5 best of all time but I just really like these songs. I know they aren't in the 'Best Of All Times' category but I enjoy listen to them. 1. Angel (Sarah McLachlan) Every time I hear this song I get choked up. 2. Too Much Love Will Kill You (Queen) Maybe not the most popular of their songs but I love it and I love this video showing the many sides of the amazing Freddie Mercury. 3. Proud Mary (Ike and Tina Turner). Theirs was a dynamite version. 4. Send In The Clowns (Judy Collins) Frank Sinatra and Barbra Streisand did good versions also, but I just love the purity of Judy Collins' voice. 5. Johnny Be Good (Chuck Berry) Well, I had to do one of his songs because I think his music influenced other musicians. Besides....he's from my hometown and his music is fun! ;D

nica575 here's some info about Leningrad Cowboys for you: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leningrad_Cowboys. They made live albums from that Total Balalaika Show - Helsinki Concert and the Global Balalaika Show ten years later too. I remember that I watched the first consert on our TV ;D : Oh and this Burning Man webcast is really addicting. www.ustream.tv/burningman

One of my favorite covers of Hallelujah was when Jason Castro sang it on Idol, even thought his voice cracked on the last note. ] Jason did a pretty good job on this, I grant. But (and sorry, this is me getting all judge-y again) he selected the 2 least-likely-to-offend stanzas of the song. I know they have a time limit, but IMO it's not the song if you censor out the meaning and the soul of it. Was this released on iTunes during the season? Did he sing the whole song? He sang longer versions many times. Here's the Amar a Morir movie Soundtrack that he did (a Meican movie).

Wow what great song choices so far. I am adding
The Pointer Sisters - I'm So Excited
Traveling Wilburys - Tweeter And The Monkey Man
Patsy Cline "Crazy"
The Moody Blues - Nights In White Satin
And the rock era song... many have already mentioned.
Have to run... have a great weekend all!

I'm not good at lists but here is a beautiful version of the Tim Buckley song, Song to the Siren. It is an ethereal and haunting song. I always thought Adam's voice would be wonderful for this song.
Lyrics: Long afloat on shipless oceans I did all my best to smile 'til your singing eyes and fingers Drew me loving to your isle And you sang Sail to me Sail to me Let me enfold you Here I am Here I am Waiting to hold you
Did I dream you dreamed about me? Were you hare when I was fox? Now my foolish boat is leaning Broken lovelorn on your rocks, For you sing, 'touch me not, touch me not, come back tomorrow: O my heart, o my heart shies from the sorrow'
I am puzzled as the newborn child I am troubled at the tide: Should I stand amid the breakers? Should I lie with death my bride? Hear me sing, 'swim to me, swim to me, let me enfold you: Here I am, here I am, waiting to hold you'
