It's amusing in terms of our discussions of cheesy lyrics that you have that particular U2 song on your list and say that lyrics are paramount because Bono literally cringes over that song and believes that the opening lines of it are the cheesiest thing he's ever written while the rest of the band totally disagrees. But all of the band insist that the entire embodiment of that song exists in the first 16 bars before a word is even sung. That intro is the heart from which the entire song was created and it took them months to develope the rest of the song in a way that they felt did not loose that emotion and feeling. They spent so much time on it in fact that Eno (producer) at one point tried to erase the track so that they would stop wasting time on it. It has become one of the band's most important songs and they once turned down 23 million dollars offered by a car company to use it in a commercial. Oh, that's so funny! Poor Bono, I sympathize... I don't think the lyrics are brilliant, but they are strong, and the song as a whole is brilliant. I had to have a U2 song on the list, because they are incredible, but it was a tough choice and I ended up going with this because it is epic even though there are other songs of theirs that I personally like more.
