I'm having a great time reading everyone's lists of favorite songs! I find myself wanting to add to my list--"Desperado! Why didn't I include Desperado?!" I purposely didn't put any Adam songs on my list because I wanted songs that we know have stood the test of time--and even though I believe that several of Adam's songs will do that, it's too soon to claim that they have. I think he writes smart, tender, and poetic lyrics that touch my soul, and I hope the rest of the world will discover them as well.
Sorry! Here are the links for the songs I listed: Stand By Me:
Long, Long Time:
The Boxer:
In the Ghetto:
Unfortunately, I can't find a YouTube of my more obscure pick, Oldest Living Son by John Stewart, but here are the lyrics. It's from his Willard album.
Sycamores grow, in their long planted rows Out there to break the April wind. Still the dust it always blows, in our eyes and in our clothes, and it's in our very soul. Like the song about me and Jim...
The back of my hand started looking like a man's Way back when I was only ten, Still the lonesome in me cries like a little boy sometimes. You can hear it scream when it comes out screaming like the wind. Chorus: Me and Jim gettin' thin, oh fare thee well to him. Fare thee well now momma, I'm gonna take good care of him. Me and Jim gettin' thin, oh fare thee well to him, but there ain't nowhere to run for the oldest living son.
Spoken: Now our dad, he was a gentle man, when we all worked at the store And the only time we saw him mad was when he talked about the war. We lost a boy at Belleau Wood and I guess he never really understood What the medals from the president were for.<BR> (chorus)

Folks, if you have time - can you please post links with your songs? I am diligently listening to all posted, but searching on YT is confusing, as I am not sure I get the songs you suggested.... well thank God I asked and now we have this mr Mix Alot masterpiece posted. The best link for me was Chunkey's I have to say: This video contains content from SME, who has blocked it in your country on copyright grounds. Sorry about that.

Everyone loves different songs for different moods. I could do a "doing the housework" top 5 , a melancholy "top 5" ....you get the picture. In other words, this is really hard Q3. Really, really hard. But fun to think about. Okay, an "ALL TIME CLASSIC" playlist.....mmmm, think I'll put on my "housework" list and get busy before my overnight guests arrive. 8-)

What amuses me is the way that has become and "inspirational" song when lyrically I always found it to be the exact opposite. For me the lyrics are imagining a world where there is peace because of an absence of all these things that people care so much about. I always found the song depressing as hell despite its sweetness. But that's the whole point of the song. the things that people care so much about, borders, possessions, religion are the root of many of the worlds problems, like wars. Do you REALLY want to live in a world where there is NOTHING to care about, where there is NO PASSION? I wouldn't, would just as soon be dead that's why I find it depressing. I had a moment in my life where I contemplated whether there was anything worth living for and the idea of not feeling any love or passion for the rest of my life was overwhelming. I decided that if I couldn't actually feel any real emotion then what was the use of going on because people in my life would be better off without me. Luckily I made it past that moment but that is the scenario that Imagine conjures up for me. Nothingness, just existance with no feeling a peace not born of contentment but of apathy. I always felt like people who find that song inspirational do so on the feel of the music rather than the lyric or that they only focus on pieces of the lyric without seeing it as a whole. To me Lennon was mocking the whole brotherhood of man thing. Maybe he wasn't but it comes across that way to me.
