I am just catching up with this thread (per usual) and didn't see any Brian Wilson. I would have to have his "God Only Knows" on my list. Paul McCartney said once it is the best song ever written and that's good enough for me. It also inspired Lennon to write "Here, There and Everywhere. Parts of it are so intricate and beautiful. I love Here, There & Everywhere. I'll make it my #6 :D and yeah to the don't stop believin...thanks journey...

I always thought that when Adam was given "One" to sing by Simon that half the verses where not TV friendly How can someone sing "did I leave a bad taste in your mouth" or the lyric about being Jesus and come to raise the dead. Adam did a great job with what he could use and then Randy says he didn't care for how he changed it up. What's a person to do????? JMO LOL it does sound dirty doesn't it? There is no lyric about Jesus raising the dead. The lyric is "Have you come here to play Jesus to the lepers in your head (or bed as Bono sometimes sings)" And Bono literally did a spit take when someone pointed out how many lyrical references to oral sex there were on that album. He then sheepishly commented that 69 is the most equal sexual position. The bad taste in your mouth lyric was really because he was improvising over the music and the band had been fighting non stop and was on the verge of breaking up and they were just jamming and when things started to coalesce he just started singing what he was feeling.

What amuses me is the way that has become and "inspirational" song when lyrically I always found it to be the exact opposite. For me the lyrics are imagining a world where there is peace because of an absence of all these things that people care so much about. I always found the song depressing as hell despite its sweetness. The song is grossly misused, I agree. When you really examine the lyrics, the song is deeply radical and revolutionary. It calls for elimination of religion and nationality and ownership and proposes a utopian, socialistic vision of brotherhood and peace. Not sure it's possible, at this point in our evolution as humans, but it's quite a challenge to the listener's worldview. And yes, the gentleness of the arrangement juxtaposed with the radical lyrics adds to the power, even though it probably contributes to people not paying attention to the words and hearing it as a pretty ballad. IMO this song is sacred and should never be sung incomplete. So your words "radical and revolutionary" sent me down the rabbit hole of great songs that also make people get off their ass and do something! (or at least riot) and on one memorable occasion got me arrested. I also like the idea of adding ~variety to the list (thanks also to chunkey, mys*&@^#r w/ the pop and marie23 and others) The Youngbloods - Darkness, Darkness (vietnam era, plus one of my fav cover songs) Public Enemy - Fight the Power (song starts at 2:00, hard to pick between the PE contenders) Queen Latifah - Ladies First (fun and feminist) Sex Pistols - Anarchy in the UK Rage against the Machine - Killing in the Name of (also Smells like Teen Spirit but I think it was already added, and less political but awesome You Really Got Me - by the Kinks, and Should I stay or should I go - clash).

On break perused first few pages of ATOP and my songs are being taken so I’m going to jump right in with 5 off the top of my head. And I’m not choosing any Adam songs because they are a given, especially BROKEN OPEN. 1. ME AND BOBBY MCGEE Janis Joplin/ written by K Kristofferson 2. FAITH George Micheal 3. HOUSE OF THE RISING SUN The Animals I rally love Broken Open also. The lyrics are so powerful, and Adam's voice makes them cut right to the center. I never got to see Adam sing BO live, and I would really love to have that experience some day. Same here, lynne. I went to 9 GNT concerts and never got to hear BO. I wish the VH1 Unplugged version had been on the accoustic album. It's right up there with Elvis' Love Me Tender.
