I can't possibly choose only 5 songs as "the best EVAH" but here are 5 that I definitely choose as personal classics.
1. Somewhere Over the Rainbow –Israel Kamakawiwo'Ole version (cheating, cause What a Wonderful World is worked into this version, too)
2. Imagine --Neil Young's performance (LOVE Lennon, but had to
work Neil in here, too...and NoAngel, ITA. This song is sacred.)
3. Time/Great Gig in the Sky --Pink Floyd (For two entire years of my life in the early 80's, I woke up to this song each morning.)
4. Hallelujah --Jeff Buckley's version (my fav, tho KD's is awesome and any L. Cohen song pleases me.)
5. Why --Annie Lennox (Diva of the first and finest degree--this performance is my absolute fav version.)
www.youtube.com/watchv=W7XRf6dSSk8&feature=relatedNow, Q3, you've gone and made me leave out COLE PORTER, all the songs from musicals that I love, Billie Holliday, Nina Simone, numerous Beatles songs, Bob Dylan, The Stones, Led Zep, Carole King, James Taylor, Bonnie Raitt, Marvin Gaye, David Bowie, Queen, Talking Heads, Bill Marley, Neil Young, Paul Simon, The Clash, U2, Bruce Springsteen, Dave Matthews, Amy Winehouse, and...and...all the recent stuff I think COULD become classic!! Shame on you!
But I CAN'T leave out these two--two of my all-time favorite artists who eschew the music business altogether and just create non-stop music that I think is brilliant.
Both of these songs may be obscure except to fans of these people (neither got--or gets--much, if any, radio play, which I don't give a fuck about and neither do they, I'm pretty sure.)
JONI MITCHELL--you would have to give me 100 slots just for her. If any of you like her and have never seen her video "Painting with Words and Pictures" you HAVE to see it sometime.
I WANT ADAM TO DO A CONCERT LIKE THIS SOMEDAY! How to choose from Both Sides, Woodstock, Blue, Amelia, Magdalene Laundries, River...on and on. But this one creeps into my head decades later.
The Last Time I Saw Richard
CONOR OBERST --again, if I HAVE to choose just one, today I'll go with this one. Angsty crazy Bob-Dylanish talent. He's a poet.
A Perfect Sonnet
Wow, I'm all hot and sweaty and tired after playing with fire tonight.
Hey, do you know what The Man's last words were?
"It's a dry heat." ;D
