I can't help but notice that I see no "top 40" songs or pop songs at all. I wonder if it is our age showing or is it some other reason What songs that are currently in the Top 40 radio chart are people going to remember in 20 years that will stand the test of time. ???

I'm new and still can't post properly... Hope it works... You didn't miss it, auroroa. The live stream didn't show it. :( I woke up this morning just in time to see the horse standing there, then suddenly it started shooting white fireworks diagonally from its mame, followed by a huge burst of red fireworks straight up off its back. And then it just started burning. It was impressive! ETA: mangokat, did you see the same thing? You described it perfectly, Katycake. It was quite impressive, and it burned for much longer than I expected it to. By the way, welcome to Atop! I'm here a lot but don't post very often.

Oh, I see that Q3 is getting her kicks by torturing us today. Only 5 songs-- really????? Okay, here goes:
Imagine- John Lennon I think hands-down the most beautiful song. And in all its understatement, deeply challenging to the listener. I harshly judge anyone who sanitizes/edits the lyrics and leaves out the "imagine there's no heaven" part.
Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds- The Beatles The Beatles have a zillion great songs, but the psychedelic imagery in this song is pure poetry.
Chimes of Freedom- Bob Dylan Timeless and universal.
Hallelujah- Leonard Cohen Brilliant song, and of course credit goes to the songwriter, but it's been covered better by others. Buckley and k.d. lang's versions are amazing.
Where The Streets Have No Name- U2 So powerful!
Hmmm, I guess for me, lyrics are paramount.

SORRY it didnt work i am def thick (add smilie cos i cant) gonna sneak off back to lurking mode lilly, - I checked your post. what happened is that you've cut off some characters from the url address, probably while copying it. example: www.youtube.com/watch?v=mmdPQthe bolded part is too short - please double check and correct the 4 entries that did not work. Otherwise - everything is formatted correctly.

Please indulge me for a minute. Nights In White Satin by the Moody Blues is also a favourite of mine. My husband who was a musician from Birminham England auditioned for the Moody Blues before they made it. He was in a band that was planning to go to Canada where I met him. He had to make a choice and he chose Canada. I'm thankful he did but I always wondered if that didn't eat at him a bit over the years. He was successful in Canada and the US but never on that level. Fate!!!

Damn, Q3. I try to follow your direction on these topics, but, I mean, damn, just five songs, across all the genres????? And is it the song we are choosing or the rendition of the song? If you asked me this daily, I would daily give you a different list. But for today:
Not While I'm Around - Stephen Sondheim
Time to Say Goodbye - It was posted yesterday as a song someone wanted Adam to sing, so I will post my favorite version, an instrumental by Chris Botti. His HeWhoCannot amedet just soars in this one. And no, it is not classical, just looks like it in this rendition. Botti is a jazz instrumentalist.
(Well, shoot. I now see that the song has to have English lyrics. Hmmm. Well, listen to the song anyway. The melody is beautiful.)
Am I Losing My Mind - Stephen Sondheim. Because I have been that hopelessly in love.
This one I chose because it is a wonderful old jazz classic, performed by the incomparable Ella Fitzgerald with Joe Pass. A masterclass in jazz.
To be continued:

The last two in my top 5.
Feeling Good - another jazz standard. Here's the best version of it I have heard.
The last may not qualify because it is obscure -- at least for now. But it is beautifully simple, performed simply and exquisitely, and the lyrics tear your soul.
