Growing up, my mom always told me the story of her most favorite book when she was growing up too. She memorized the first opening paragraphs and I just listened mesmerized by the story. Fast forward many many years later. My mom's 85th birthday was fast approaching and I did not know what to get her. Then I remembered her favorite book but could not remember the title or the author. Funny that I remembered the characters and the first few lines so after some sleuthing on the internet, "voila, I found it!". And I found a first edition, printed in 1870. It was a little pricey but I went ahead and got it. When it arrived, I carefully opened the book (hardbound with gold edges) and it really smelled good. It was given by Grandma Greene to her grandaughter, Emily on Christmas 1875. I can not forget how thrilled my mom was when she opened her present. To this day, my mom thinks it is one of the best presents she has ever received (she just turned 94 and still enjoys reading). Yes, good books live forever! [smiles] I am currently holding in my hands (very carefully) a book that I believe my husband picked up at a yard sale. The binding is deceptively recent, perhaps as late as the 1920s. But the pages inside....the delicate crumbling pages inside are from the original 1700's printing. I can't even describe how this book smells, or how incredible to read about Plymouth from that era's point of view. We also have an 1852 copy of the Constitution and an 1899 copy of "The Graded Literature Readers Second Book" with stories about Foxy Loxy and the Three Bears...which used to belong to a little girl named Dorothy who occasionally colored in the exercise pages. [grins] They sit on our overflowing bookshelves amongst copies of Sherlock Holmes, Terry Pratchet, the Insult Dictionary, Thomas and Friends Railway Rhymes, and a slightly chewed version of the Hamster Ballet Company. ;D ETA: And, why yes, our books are in no particular order!

Yeah, this is really Christmassy...not I can remember seeing this vid a while back and I can't remember how I got to it, but I LOVED it. Just watched it again and enjoyed it just as much. Tom Jones & Cerys Matthews - Baby Its Cold OutsideTom is a bit long in the tooth for this, but still good and Cerys Matthews voice is fabulous - even tho I've never heard of her. LOVE the set!!! And love the ending. It's a fun watch. Adam would look (and sound) awesome in this sort of vid.

Hoppers... "a slightly chewed version of the Hamster Ballet Company."The Hamster Ballet Company??? Just this title is pure ecstasy!!! LOL [laughs] Its a compendium of classic ballet stories reworked with tutu-wearing hamsters. Its very cute. My daughter thought the pages tasted good when we read it to her when she was little. (Ok, little- er than now!!). [sigh] Seriously, how can you truly experience books if all you have is a Kindle? Here on my computer desk I have a miniaturized collection of Beatrix Potter stories. The entire set of 4 can fit in my hand, but every doll-sized page has the original illustrations. I just finished reading my daughter a Debi Gliori story, "Goodnight Baby Bat" where Mama Bat's wings unfurl, Snail's shell opens up, and pages of layered, tranlucent vellum show snowflakes falling to the ground. The other story tonight was "In November" which is a fairly physically large book, long but relative narrow, with its illustrations obviously created in oil paint - each brush stroke evident as you view the oversized pages. A Kindle makes everything....the same.

But.. have you READ the lyrics? C'mon baby I simply must go - Baby, it's cold outside The answer is no - Ooh baby, it's cold outside This welcome has been - I'm lucky that you dropped in So nice and warm -- Look out the window at that storm My sister will be suspicious - Man, your lips look so deliciousMy brother will be there at the door - Waves upon a tropical shore My maiden aunt's mind is vicious - Gosh your lips look deliciousWell maybe just a half a drink more - Never such a blizzard beforeI've got to go home - Oh, baby, you'll freeze out there Say, lend me your comb - It's up to your knees out thereYou've really been grand - Your eyes are like starlight now But don't you see - How can you do this thing to me There's bound to be talk tomorrow - Making my life long sorrow At least there will be plenty implied - If you caught pneumonia and died I really can't stay - Get over that old out Ahh, but it's cold outside Baby it's cold outside Brr its cold... It's cold out there Cant you stay awhile longer baby Well... I really shouldn't... alright Make it worth your while baby Ahh, do that again..NGL, this Christmas song would be a good one for Adam to sing! How about The Christmas Song, I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas or My Grown Up Christmas List? :D I think "My Grown Up Christmas List" would be a wonderful song for Adam to sing. How beautiful that would be.

A hundred years ago when my daughter was maybe about two, I had an exquisite little children's book = kind of palm-sized like the tiny Beatrix Potter ones, and my DD adored that book more than life itself... She eventually ate it. Yup. SHE ATE THE ENTIRE BOOK, page by page. Sigh. She still adores books to this day. Luckily she doesn't eat them anymore. :

You have to internalize it. Literally.

Books are not clutter they are friends I love books! Real books. Books you can hold in your hand. And, yes, I have books everywhere. But we may be dying out, like the dinosaurs. After transporting my beloved books - 16 boxes of them - one too many times, I gave most of them away and am now on a first name basis with all the women at my local library as well as the library at the local college. I love books and have resisted the urge to buy a Kindle.
