I hope this comes across how I mean it... I haven't watched AI, so I haven't observed this James myself; however, I have pretty strong feelings about giving people who are in this type of competition a pass because of some physical or mental problem. If you choose to compete, then you should compete on an equal footing with everyone else. Some reasonable consideration such as helping a blind person find their mark on the stage is one thing, but i come down to how well do you sing and how well do you present yourself as a performer? Part of what I dislike about Idol (and why I do not watch it) is all the backstory/sob-story stuff. I am not interested in that - show me how well you can sing. The absolute worst case of this was on DWTS when they had the woman with the false leg. Yes, she certainly was able to do far more than I would have expected with her disability, however there were much better DANCERS who were sent home before her just because the voters (and the show's judges) were saying/thinking "It is amazing what she can do with a handicap" - while that is true, that is NOT what the purpose of the show it. If someone chooses to compete on one of these shows with a handicap, then they should also have to perform at the same level as those who do not in order to do well on the show. I realize that the "voters" obviously do not agree with me but this crap highlights for me why I dislike these shows. I applaud you for this post. I have been struggling with my ambivalence about this issue. If the diagnosis of Aspergers is correct (not suggesting it is a ploy, but the diagnosis is difficult, and people are sometimes misdiagnosed), then James is doing very well dealing with this condition. He interacts with others more significantly, engages in appropriate hugs, looks directly at people more than I am accustomed to with people with this syndrome. However, his irritating or off-putting manner might be unavoidable; he may not have any idea how he appears to others. Still, I don't believe James should be held to a different standard than other contestants because of his syndrome. As many of you know, my profession is working with people who have a disability. I am an advocate for "reasonable accommodations" that allow a person with a disability to function to the best of their ability. That said, if they cannot do the job, they cannot do the job. (I am not about to demand that deaf people be hired to work as flight controllers speaking to pilots over the radio.) American Idol is, and always has been, a popularity contest, not just a talent contest or a singing contest. If it were a singing contest, that's all we would see them do. Or better yet, we would not see them at all, but just hear the voice. Idol contestants are voted for because people like their sound, their type of music, their look, their fashion, their persona, their personality, their back story, and the relationship the develop with the other contestants, and the audience in the studio and at home. Since that is the design of the show, I think that James needs to be judged on those things just like any other contestant, and let the chips fall as they may. J/S

The problem I have with James comment to Hollywood Gossip is that HE is the one that invoked Adam's name! HE is the one who chose to sing ACIGC with Adam's lyric change! Did anyone besides me notice that he used the phrase "we are different stylistically" like Adam did in his tweet about James?

All contestants on these shows are held to different standards because everyone voting has different standards from each other. The only way to avoid that is to do what "The Voice" is alledgedly going to do - completely conceal the identity of the contestants.
I like the way Durbin sounded and performed on "boys' nite." I thought it was sweet that he and Stefano seem to have a bromance of sorts. If I voted (which I don't because the only time I've ever picked up a phone for a tv show is when Adam Lambert showed up), I would have voted for him.

I am glad you stuck your head in. I have missed you. I don't do twitter.
One of the things that turned me off of Gokey(one of the many) was that he kept giving that heart message with his hands. It was part of a commercial for an eye glass company at the time of Idol and he kept wearing new eye glasses each week. I always thought that he was pimping for the eye glass company.

Missed out on the squeeing last night as I was late to the party, so excuse me if I SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE a bit now! Awesome news, can't wait! Hope some of the 'locals' get a chance at AI tickets so we'll have one of our own in the house!
Great posts yesterday and today, as usual here! Love some of the discussions and find myself often agreeing with different points of view, but you are all much more articulate and knowledgeable than I am, so I'll just nod to myself in agreement! I'll continue to visit daily and share in the Adam LOVE!

Did anyone besides me notice that he used the phrase "we are different stylistically" like Adam did in his tweet about James? But, so what? Hasn't Adam said that when he was criticized for being theatrical, he thought 'well, pop music is theatrical - look at Gaga.' But, he got tired of the comparisons, eventually. Durbin got tired sooner. Does that make him so horrible? Yes, I noticed he made the same point Adam did. That's because . . . he's trying to make the same point.

So late to the FLAIL!!!!! OMG I am so thrilled!
RE: Durbin Putting everything aside, I'm just not that enamored of his voice. Yes, he has range but to my ears, it's not really all that pleasant. JMO. Obviously, others hear differently or he wouldn't have made into the top 10.
I'm going to try to give him the benefit of the doubt and say that he was just trying to differentiate his style and Adam's in the TVGuide interview. However, if you are going to mention Adam yourself on Idol and also sing one of his most memorable songs from the show (ACIGC), you're inviting comparison. period. It did come across a little churlish especially this early in the competion, IMO.

I SO have no problem with what James Durbin said: "We're completely different people stylistically, tone-wise. The only similarity that we have is the high note." That is the EXACT gist of what Adam tweeted: "[W]hile we both have a rock scream I think we're pretty different stylistically." I'd have a problem if Durbin said he WAS just like Adam. And: "He [Lambert] put his foot in the door; I want to try and put my foot straight through the door. He did some rock, I LIKED IT [caps mine]. I want to do some metal like Iron Maiden, ACDC, Ozzy, Sabbath." Nothing wrong with that - it's COMPLIMENTARY. Just as Adam said Cook's experimentation on AI opened the door for him to change things up, Durbin is saying Adam doing some classic rock opens the door for him bring in the metal. It'll be interesting as hell, to me, to see how that works. Adam has shut down some comparision questions (Lord Gaga, anyone?). Durbin is reacting to hearing all the Adam comparisons, he isn't dissing Adam AT ALL. Gosh, I hope he doesn't get any misguided hate from Adam fans. He's just saying they're different. Which Adam said. IMO he deserves to be in the Top 10 absolutely. ETA: Are Glamberts already commenting negatively about him on that article? :-[ I totally agree with this, very well stated!! Plus it will be refreshing and entertaining to hear metal (which I love) on AI.
