It's a DOL (Dept of Labor) requirement, not a union requirement. The union may set the scale but the fact that there must be compensation is due to labor laws. If it were a union requirement, then only people in the union would get paid. Hmmm, but entertainers work for just the exposure all the time and get no compensation. How does that work? (I'm not being snarky here. Just curious.) ETA: However, I'm sure Adam is getting paid a lot for Idol! When would they get no compensation? It's very little compensation but there is a minimal fee to appear on TV. Talk show guests will sometimes bring it up and laugh about how much they're being paid. And I very much doubt that any performers who appear on AI would be paid "a lot." An appearance on Idol is a rare promotional opportunity. They get paid if they can sell their product.

I think I heard that when Adam was on Leno he got paid about $2,000. If you think of travel, lodging, and paying the band; the night cost him way more than $2,000. He made nothing.

The report was that Lady Gaga got over $300K for her 2010 Bad Romance/Aljandro performance and spent more than that on the production.

Wasn't there something in the press recently that Gaga had high demands for her Idol perf? The only part that I do remember was that due to GAGA, the AI stage had many extra lights added, and that they gave her whatever she wanted. Adam asked for a laser ...first time for a laser on their stage; so AI now has a laser. No, Adam brought his own lasers. These were the guys who he was getting ready to use for his tour. When Ryan mentions the lasers Adam says "Yeah, I brought lasers." The show did not provide them and did not keep them they were leased by Adam for the performance.

(Idol paid, Adam selected the company.) Adam did use the Idol smoke machines though!!

Guess they just leased it again for Xtina's performance. Adam almost drowned in that smoke..be careful what you ask for, or more importantly ..get a good guy to run the equipment!

I was just at a conf this week and the way leases/rentals are booked is going to change. No more immediate write-offs. OK, back to the regularly scheduled programming.
