This story of this man at the station concert really hits home today for me. One of the sons of an extended family member just sent me a long Facebook message telling me that he is gay, something I have been pretty sure about for some time. His immediate family is very conservative and strictly religious, and although I believe they suspect he is gay, some of them come from a "love the sinner, but encourage him to overcome the temptation to sin" type of mentality. He is beautiful and sensitive and talented, and I believe he doesn't open up to his family completely because he doesn't want to hurt them. I have tried to create openings for discussion with him when we are together. I think he has always been a bit drawn to me for some reason, probably because he knows I've always had a soft spot for him. Ive shared with him my admiration for Adam Lambert's music and for the way he lives his life partly to let him know my own views about issues I think may be relevant to him. Today, I just received a Facebook message from this kid, who moved away from California to another city to attend a conservative college, (I believe at the suggestion of his family) telling me he is gay and feels alone and angry because he sometimes doesn't feel safe in the city where he is... heartbreaking and scary. I wish I had better answers to give him. I wish the world would always show him better answers. I love Adam for his music and talent, but I also love him tonight for showing his real face to the world and for having the courage and honesty to be himself, to walk the walk and not give a f*ck. I feel for this young man. How wonderful that he feels he can talk to you. Maybe you can share with him some advice from Adam, who tells people that if they are in a bad situation they should find a place where they are accepted. He may not be ready to do it yet, but it might stick in his head and give him courage when the time comes for him to move on. I certainly wish hi the very best. And I hope he continues to communicate with you.

The whole rollout of era 2 by RCA has me depressed. Maybe I'm just too invested. But Adam's remarks today about the politics of radio play did not improve my mood.
I'm guessing that a lot of the "politics" Adam is talking about is homophobia, pure and simple, on the part of program directors and djs. I heard today that a dj in Seattle, which is a "progressive" city, made fun of a woman who called in during contest for an upcoming meet and greet. DJ said, You know he's gay don't you? Really gay". Like how could any woman be so excited about meeting a guy who's not (to paraphrase) a real man. (A tape of this conversation is on AO.)
So in a week or so Adam will be doing a radio appearance with another dj who thinks he is fair game for gay jokes. If program directors/djs don't take him serious as a human being and an artist, I wouldn't expect them to play his music.
Adam is not even doing radio promo in St. Louis, where his music is never played. But if he were, I would expect the djs to make similar comments.

I could very well have mis-remembered what A said about where his mom lives...weird, though, because I know she moved to LA a couple of years ago, so not sure why I think he said SF...but I think I probably just don't remember correctly.
And Lynne, I hope your young man starts making choices FOR himself and BY himself as soon as he can--Adam ALWAYS seems to mention finding a supportive community--and I simply could not stand living around people who thought I was a sinner or a deviant because of my orientation. I'll bet he feels a lot better when he finally lives around accepting people at some point. Good that he at least recognizes acceptance from you...

I agree, heathcliff, his comments on radio made me sad. And here he is, on this HUGE radio tour basically to convince these stations that he is a "normal" guy, and to maybe take a chance and play his music. That's pretty much what it's about, because it's not like these stations are putting him on air to advertise his music to the masses. He is generally playing to people who are fans and who have probably preordered his CD already. This is all about making inroads with radio peeps. I hope it works.
And, using Chicago as an example, while I am glad he got to visit 4 stations, I HATE that 3 of them barely acknowledged him being there. Not a mention on their websites, and really no advertisement apart from tweets.
I really don't blame RCA. I think this has been a pretty big challenge for them.

The DJ is an asshat. >:( >:( and it so sucks that Adam has to endure all this nonsense. I am thinking that is WHY they are sending him around everywhere, so he can charm and impress these boneheads One. Station. At. A. Time. And he's doing it. They're blown away not just by how good he is but by how smart and incredibly nice he is. People can be insular assholes until they have a direct connection with someone. I'm hoping Lynn's relative will soon experience this. and I'm hoping Adam will wear these boneheads down. (God, I hope the lady calling in said, WTF, dude! Who CARES???) It isn't just Adam though. As I was driving home, the DJ at the HAC I listen to took a call from a young girl (and this DJ is pretty young and I've never known him to be douchey). The girl requested One Direction and the guy talked to her for quite awhile and was pretty much mocking her the entire time AND mocking One Direction. It's like dude, you work for an HAC station and you're acting like a too-cool indie hipster?

I really don't think the "political" statement about radio has all to do with being gay. I am sure that is a part of it but there are other factors. For instance he is a reality show contestant. He is a white male in a genre dominated by pretty Pop divas. << That may actually be the biggest hurdle he has! If being gay was a major probelm he would not have had the radio play he had for WWFM and IIHY or sold the amount of albums and singles he has sold. And I think 2012 is an even better climate for him than 2009/10 was.

Some Q&A and WWFM You'll have to tell us if one of the questions was yours, Hoopla!! Nope. Here's the KC scoop, what little I know of it. He flew in from Chicago last night and stayed at an airport hotel. He didn't even get to see a smidgen of KC--and I really think it's a beautiful city. (City of Fountains, Plaza area, Westport, Jazz District, Loose Park, boulevards, etc.) He was at 93.3 between 5-7am. REALLY? Pics/vids or it didn't happen--but they had a radio contest--I haven't seen a thing so far tonight on that promo stop, though...? A girl from Chicago/RCA flew in and drove him from KC to 105.9KissFM in Lawrence, KS (1 1/2 hrs from KC, MO.) They almost got lost--but he really wasn't late. I talked to her during the meet and greet. Nice, regular, dressed-down 25-30ish gal. Said I can't believe how lucky you are to ride with him and Tommy in a car for three hours today. She just laughed and said "Yeah, I know!" Then tonight he was somewhere? in KC for the 99.7ThePoint gig. THAT is where you're seeing the vids from. Not the one I was at. My thing in Lawrence--105.9 has posted pics, but I've found no vid yet anywhere. But haven't been on twitter much yet. Going there right now, though! I will be behind AGAIN tomorrow, so if anyone finds anymore video from any of these KC area stops, could you please PM me with a page # or a twitter name to look up, pretty please? BTW, M and T have iphones and could have recorded, but didn't want to. They think he doesn't like it, and they really prefer being "present in the moment." I would have--and did START to record Q&A--until she said "HOOPLA--WHERE ARE YOU?" Then I dropped my $20 camera. And kept it in my purse after that. It is truly useless anyway.
