QAL Tour Gem!
If you are looking for a great venue to see Queen + Adam Lambert …. Consider Boardwalk Hall!
4.24.14 by Q3
There is a gem on this upcoming QAL Tour that I think people may be missing. It was one of the 5 late additions to the tour and is in a somewhat inconvenient location – Atlantic City. This venue is worth a trip.
Not only is the a very special, historic venue but Boardwalk Hall may be the venue with the best acoustics on the entire Queen + Adam Lambert Tour.
BONUS! There are still great seats available.
Don’t take my word….
For starters, check out the Yelp Visitor rating for Boardwalk Hall:

“Great concert venue” Excellent

Last Feb I saw The Who at Boardwalk Hall, previously i have seen Nickelback and Lady GaGa. All the shows were great, the venue is a nice change from other NJ/NY locations. I think the prices are a bit cheaper, you can park pretty cheaply at the city lot within about 2 blocks of the entrance. There are several restaurants convenient to the parking lot and the venue that I have visited including Ruby Tuesday's and Longhorn. Farther away is The Hard Rock Cafe, Rainforest Cafe, a new Margaritaville (not sure where this is). I have sat up in the highest section on both sides as well as straight back from the stage on the lower level, there doesn't seem to be a bad seat in the house. Workers are friendly and helpful. I'm very happy that I discovered this location for shows.

Or maybe this review from a Phish concert aficionado [or is that ePhishionado? ]
Over the years I have seen a lot of music in interesting venues: the original Santana Band at Frost, George Benson on Broadway, James Brown at the old Mountain Winery above Silicon Valley, the Stones at the Orpheum, Bob Marley at Harvard Stadium, the Grateful Dead at the Greek, Pat Metheny at Red Rocks, Dizzy Gillespie at the Agora Theatre in Lake Placid, Ted Nugent in a riot at the old New Haven Coliseum (lucky to get out of that one alive!).
What makes a venue great? First and foremost, the venue must create the right atmosphere for the artists and audience to be inspired, comfortable, and connect. Great sound, nice sightlines and lots of cold brew help to define the experience, but that is not enough; a truly special venue must have an almost mystical element to push the whole experience over the top (thinking Fillmore East?).
When a band becomes as popular as Phish, venue options become more limited. Higher Ground and Nectars are simply not going to happen with warning. During the summer the fans are largely relegated to outdoor rock sheds, which, aside from SPAC and Merriweather Post, are hard to get to and overrated in my experience…..especially post-show. The winter is even worse as hockey rinks become the primary option. Jumping over the rail and pretending you are on the first line only goes so far.
Phish were last in Atlantic City in June of 2012 playing outdoors at an old municipal airport: three nights, forty Thousand fans per night. While tech extraordinaire Mike Burns and I were preparing to run though the Dimension Reverb with Mike Gordon backstage on humid afternoon before the final show, he told me about the old Atlantic City Convention Center, which is now called “Boardwalk Hall”. Apparently Phish did a run of shows there in 2010, and the experience left him in awe: “You get kind of jaded in my line of work”, said Mike, “I have seen a lot of venues, but this place really stood out. It is historic. It is special.”

But what about the music?
When Boardwalk Hall was restored, they had to remove and replace the ceiling because it contained asbestos. That provided an opportunity to the acoustics.
The original 137-foot barrel vaulted ceiling was restored to provide improved acoustics and high-tech lighting effects. Replacement of the historic ceiling was required to eliminate the asbestos fireproofing on the trusses. As a result, significant improvements could be made to the acoustics. Sound absorbing material is now located behind the new ceiling finishes, bringing the space into compliance with modern acoustic standards.
Built in 1929 to host the city's growing convention industry, the historic Hall was touted an architectural marvel at that time. With its large 137 foot-high barrel vault ceiling, the Atlantic City Convention Hall as it was formerly known, laid claim to the world's largest clear span space during that period.
Boardwalk Hall takes pride in a number of firsts. In 1930, it hosted the nation's first indoor college football game; from July 1942 until November 16, 1945 the Army Air Forces used Convention Hall as a headquarters and training facility during World War II; the country's first indoor helicopter flight was made here in 1970, and Boardwalk Hall was listed on the United State Register of Historic Places as a National Historic Landmark in 1987. In the early years, a number of celebrated artists have performed at Boardwalk Hall including The Beatles, Frank Sinatra, the big band orchestras of Louis Armstrong, Count Basie and Woody Herman, Luciano Pavarotti, The Police, the Rolling Stones and many more.
In December 1998 the facility began an extensive three year, $90 million renovation and restoration that would transform the building into a modern special events arena capable of variable seating for up to 14,770 people. In 2001, the new, more modern Hall was unveiled with much fanfare. Renamed "Boardwalk Hall," the building was officially re-opened with a moving patriotic ceremony held on October 11, 2001 to honor those who serve and protect our country, state and communities.
The innovative renovation received nine architectural and engineering awards, including the 2003 National Preservation Award and Design and Construction magazine's 2002 Renovation Project of the Year.
Since reopening, a host of world-class entertainers and national touring productions have taken the legendary stage, such as icons Lady Gaga, Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney, Barbara Streisand, Madonna, The Rolling Stones, Jimmy Buffett, and Andrea Bocelli, Justin Bieber, Van Halen, and The Who among others. Boardwalk Hall has also showcased some of the most exciting professional boxing matches carded in recent history, including 2013's Adrien Broner vs. Gavin Rees in the WBC Lightweight World Championship, 2012's Bernard Hopkins vs. Chad Dawson in the WBC and Ring Magazine Light Heavyweight Championship and Ring magazine's 2003 Fight Of The Year, Gatti vs. Ward III. Other popular sports and family entertainment have included the Atlantic 10 Men's Basketball Championship and other NCAA basketball games, the 2012 AHL All-Star Classic, the Atlantic City Boardwalk Rodeo, New Jersey's State High School Wrestling Championships, Walking With Dinosaurs, Disney On Ice, Cirque Du Soleil, Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, WWE, and "Operation Hat Trick", a charity hockey game comprised of top NHL players which was assembled to raise money for three storm-related charities due to superstorm Sandy.
For ten years since 2003, leading trade publications Billboard magazine and Venues Today have recognized the Hall as either the top grossing mid-sized arena in North America or the World. This past year Venues Today recognized Boardwalk Hall as the decade's #1 "Top Stop" in North America and #2 in the World which was based on the venue's box office performance.

Some cool stuff about the Hall
The arched roof was modeled after the clear-span train sheds of Europe and closer to home, Philadelphia's Reading Terminal. It maintained its structural integrity without supporting beams, through 10 pairs of three-hinged steel trusses, each spanning 350 feet and weighing 220 tons per pair. The trusses were tied to the frame columns to allow the building to flex with wind and ground pressure. Between the monumental arches was an inner ceiling clad in acoustic tiles made from compressed sugar cane fiber. The tiles were detailed to suggest the clay tile ceilings of a Roman public bath. It was truly a work of art, as well as a functional building.
The new Hall claimed the world's largest clear span space--456 feet long and 310 feet wide under a 137 foot-high barrel vault ceiling. The large, column-free space was ideal for exhibitions and conventions. It also boasted the latest in technical advances--lighting, acoustics, and performance design.
Novel approaches to the theatrical lighting were incorporated into the structure. The 196,000 square-foot barrel ceiling of aluminum painted tiles became the reflector for a dazzling show of lighting technology, anticipating the future of using artificial light to enhance and define exterior and interior space. The design brought an "electric sun" inside the auditorium.
Wouldn’t it be cool if…..

Boardwalk Hall Organ Tour Midmer Losh Kimball Organs Restoration
Check out the www.boardwalkhall.com/organs.asp webpage for tours and performances of the restored organs! Turn it up loud! A thank-you video for the tour given by the restorers of the world's largest organ, the Midmer-Losh, and it's smaller sibling the Kimball in the attached ballroom.
ACCHOS is now the HORC, Historic Organ Restoration Committee.
If the goal of the organ designer is to put the power of an orchestra into one persons control, then this is the first organ to exceed that goal. The "string section" of this organ is the finest in the world.
Thanks to Harry Bellangy and Ross Mcneille for additional photos.

Is this the place for Queen + Adam Lambert Epicness?
It is impossible to predict where epicness will occur but if there is a location and a venue that was built to be an epic stage, right on the beach, looking out to London, it is this venue! I mean seriously, the building has its own light show.
Let me close with a special video of Boardwalk Beat, Atlantic City's 3D Light Show at Boardwalk Hall.

#56 Tear It Up” (1984)
Written by Brian May.
Released on The Works February 27, 1984.
Disregarding a best-of, a soundtrack, one single made with David Bowie and the obligatory solo projects, this is the glitter-rock band's first real album in some time. And rather than move in ever-widening spirals of bombast, they've trimmed a lot of the excess — mainly, the fat vibrato of Brian May's multitracked guitars and Freddie Mercury's overdubbed tabernacle choir of vocal effects. What's left is a lean hard-rock sound, making The Works perhaps the first record to refute the maxim that the words Queen and listenable are, of necessity, mutually exclusive.
Granted, the messages have all been heard before and practically cancel each other out: love is all you need; let's get physical; machines have feelings, too; be an individual, stand your ground. Instead, the revelations are in the music. For the carnivorous, rewards are to be found in the thundering Led Zeppelinisms of "Tear It Up" and "Hammer to Fall"…..
The Works is a royal feast of hard rock without that awful metallic aftertaste; as such, it might turn out to be the Led Zeppelin II of the Eighties.
Parke Puterbaugh, Rolling Stone, April 12, 1984.

In the wake of the tepid response to Hot Space (1982), Brian wrote this song as part of an attempt to revive Queen's old sound. It features stomping percussion similar to "We Will Rock You" and recaptures the rock sound that was prevalent in the band’s music from the 1970’s.
The demo of "Tear It Up" had Brian May on vocals instead of Freddie.
The song was also released on:
Live At Wembley '86, May 26, 1992
Queen Rocks, November 3, 1997
Single, B-Side:
Hammer To Fall, B-side, September 10, 1984
Personnel
Musicians:
Freddie Mercury - lead vocals
Brian May - guitars, backing vocals
John Deacon - bass guitar
Roger Taylor - drums, tambourine, backing vocals

“Tear It Up”
Are you ready? - well are you ready?
We're gonna tear it up
Yeah yeah yeah yeah
(Hey)
Give me your mind baby give me your body
Give me some time baby let's have a party
It ain't no time for sleeping baby
Soon it's round your street I'm creeping
You'd better be ready
We gonna Tear it up
Stir it up
Break it up - baby
You gonna Tear it up
Shake it up
Make it up - as you go along
Tear it up
Square it up
Wake it up - baby
Tear it up
Stir it up
Stake it out - and you can't go wrong
(Hey listen)
I love you because you're sweet and I love you because you're naughty
I love you for your mind baby give me your body
I wanna be a toy at your birthday party
Wind me up - wind me up - wind me up - let me go
Tear it up
Stir it up
Break it up - let me go
Tear it up
Shake it up
Make it up - as you go along
Tear it up
Turn it up
Burn it up
Are you ready?(Oh yeah)
Baby baby baby are you ready for me?(Oh yeah)
Baby baby baby are you ready for love?(Oh yeah)
Are you ready - are you ready - are you ready for me?(Oh yeah)
I love you so near I love you so far
I gotta tell you baby you're driving me Ga Ga
