I am thankful that Acoustic Live!, Aftermath Remix and GML -- all interim projects -- have kept Adam in the press and gotten him a bit of radio airplay. Very few new artist have this kind of product at all. We are really lucky -- most Idol alums get an album, 1 or 2 videos, and 1 or 2 singles promoted to radio. Cook got an album, 1 single promoted to radio, and 2 videos plus promotional support for a US tour. We are in the lead up to his new album and there is little promotion. Adam got 1 album, 3 US singles released to radio + TFM, 3 videos + TFM, 2 EPs, a DVD+CD from the tour, singles in at least 28 countries, plus support for a worldwide tour (including 2 promo trips to UK/Europe and 1 promo trip to Asia-Pacific). Adam's album is due out in the Fall and he is getting more press and buzz than anyone from Idol except Carrie Underwood. That includes Cook, Daughtry and Kelly. (Disclaimer: I'm not a Cook fan!) Cook did, however, have 3 singles released and promoted to radio. The 3 singles were TOML, Light On and CBTM. Two of those singles had videos. I believe they tried to push a couple of his songs to rock radio. I know that RCA didn't do a huge push internationally, but didn't Cook's album sell around 200K outside of the US? There had to be some type of promotion overseas. He did have a mini Asian Tour that drew huge concert crowds. Didn't Daughtry have 3 singles with videos from his last album? RCA just released his 2nd B-sides album. Kelly had 3 singles, with videos from her last album and an international tour to support the album. I agree that we are lucky, but RCA has fully supported some of the other Idols. Lee and Crystal...not so much. LOL I do not disagree that Sony has supported some other Idol not named Adam -- but the list is short. My comment was not comparing Adam to other NEW artists not Idols. And the level of support from RCA for Adam is almost unparalleled for a new artist without a blockbuster hit. It is the kind of investment that is made when a label believes an artist has longevity and significant market potential. Many Idol alums and the vast majority of Idol alums are treated opportunistically on their first album. Look at Idol debut -- Adam is the only one with a global promotional push, the only one with a Live EP, a Remix EP, a DVD, a Live CD and a worldwide tour. What other new US artist, who doesn't have a platinum album, has this kind of promotion? A month ago, it might have been possible to say Bruno Mars but his debut album has now shipped Platinum in the US. Regarding Idol -- for the most part, I think these artists have gotten the promotion that fit the situation. There are three Idol alums who had more than 2 singles promoted by Sony to radio from their debuts -- Carrie, Daughtry and Jordin. Note: Jordin is the the only American Idol contestant ever to have their first four singles all crack the Top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100 -- coronation song + 3 singles from her album.A couple of examples: Kelly had 1 single promoted to radio from her first album. Her second album single, 3rd overall, Low, was released to radio and got limited support from RCA. Her 4th single was "Breakaway" from her second album. Cook had two singles from his debut album. (TOML was his coronation song and RCA included it as a bonus track on his album. But it was originally released and promoted by 19R, not RCA. May 22, 2008 release date.) Cook's two album singles -- Light On (lead single) and "Come Back to Me" which made it to #63 on the Billboard Hot 100 and did not get radio support. He also had a charity single "Permanent" which sold very well after his Idol performance. There are pages and pages on Cook, Archie and other Idol fansites about the lack of support from RCA/Jive/J for their Idol. You can find the same thing on fansites for almost every artist and every label.

Scorpio - The icing really is good so here's the recipe for the Lemon Cream cupcakes:
Lemon Cream Cupcakes Makes 20
2/3 cup butter or margarine, softened 1-1/3 cups sugar 2 eggs 1-1/4 teaspoons grated lemon peel or organic lemon essence 3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract 2-1/3 cups all-purpose flour 3/4 teaspoon baking soda 1/4 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 1-1/3 cups sour cream
n a mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar. Beat in eggs, one at a time. Add lemon peel and vanilla; mix well. Combine dry ingredients; add to creamed mixture alternately with sour cream (batter will be thick). Fill greased or paper-lined muffin cups with 1/4 cup of batter. Bake at 350 degrees F for 25-30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes; remove to wire racks to cool completely.
Quick Lemon Buttercream Icing Frosts 10 - 12 cupcakes
1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract 2 cups confectioners' sugar, sifted 2 tablespoons milk 1 tsp. grated lemon peel 1/2 tsp. organic lemon flavouring You can use blue 3 food coloring but I used Blue Curacao to tint the frosting light blue and used edible glitter and gold sprinkles.
Cream room temperature butter with a hand mixer, the paddle attachment of a stand mixer, or a wooden spoon until smooth and fluffy. Gradually beat in confectioners' sugar until fully incorporated. Beat in vanilla and lemon extract and lemon peel. 2. Pour in milk and beat for an additional 3-4 minutes. Add food coloring, if using, and beat for thirty seconds until smooth or until desired color is reached.
This is a great salad and quite low in calories:
Edamame Salad From The Crystal Palace Restaurant at Magic Kingdom Park Yield: 4 to 6 servings
4 cups edamame (young soybeans), fresh or frozen 1/2 cup rice wine vinegar 1/4 cup sesame oil 1 teaspoon coarse salt 1 cup chopped Napa cabbage 1/2 cup chopped bok choy 1/2 cup shredded carrots 1 tablespoon black sesame seeds 1/4 cup shredded white daikon radish
1. Cook fresh or frozen beans in boiling, salted water for 3 minutes. Chill thoroughly. 2. In a small miximg bowl, combine vinegar, sesame oil, salt, cabbage and bok choy. Let sit at room temperature for 20 minutes. Cabbage will wilt slightly. 3. Mix in carrots, then refrigerate for 1 hour. 4. To serve, to with sesame seeds and daikon radish.

A month ago, it might have been possible to say Bruno Mars but his debut album has now shipped Platinum in the US. Whaaat???? You compared Adam to the other Idols. That's why I commented about some of the other American Idol contestants. There aren't many new artists with these type of opportunities, except Bieber and Gaga after their debut albums, but Idol contestants aren't exactly new artists. The idolettes had 20 million viewers watching them every week for months. The fact that Adam has a large, dedicated fan base and does very well outside of the US, probably helps him get some opportunities that other artists don't receive. Bruno was getting some pretty nice promo and perks months ago. I think the multiple Grammy nods and Grammy performance really pushed his popularity up the charts. CBTM got enough radio play and support to sell around 550K and it was in the top 15 on HAC for a while. Not as good as IIHY, but pretty good for a dreary HAC song. ;D Plus, DC had already sold over 1 million by the time CBTM was getting radio airplay. Oh lord-isn't that the truth! There are pages and pages on AO complaining about lack of support from RCA for FYE. : Like I said in my previous comment, I do believe we have been lucky to follow one of the Idols that Sony fully supports. I agree that Adam is one of the ones that they seem to have long-term goals and high expectations for in the future!

Am I the only one who wants a Martini and a cupcake right now?! Oh and those martinis were GOOD! Great recap Melisende and so glad most of the people liked the show. I spoke with your brother before we watched the DVD and he told me he didn't like the Red Robinson show at all. Music appreciation is very personal, but I find it really hard to understand his comment that Adam has no stage presence. You may not like his style, but to say he doesn't have any is just hard to fathom! Thank you for all the work you did to make this party happen. It was great and I'm so glad you "found" me on Atop and invited me!

Melisende --
Thanks so much for the cupcake recipe--it looks fabulous. The Edamame salad looks good, too (and I always look for great low-calorie healthy salads). Yummy!

All the whining and kvetching about what label supports which artist to what extent and who is being snubbed. :-/ :-/ It's called the recording INDUSTRY and the music BUSINESS. It is the label's job to select which artists to sign, which artists to promote, to what extent, and for whatever reason. It's their job to make as much money for the company as possible, in the short and the long run. It's not about encouraging and nurturing artists and artistry.
The auto industry does not design cars based on what is the most fuel efficient design possible, which has the least effect on the environment, which is the most durable, or even which is the safest. They consider such things, but, bottom line, they design cars based on what their studies and experts have said the public wants, and what will sell the best for the greatest profit margin. Why would anyone expect the music industry to do anything different?
The more I learn, the more I realize I am damned lucky that they produce any music from any artists that I personally enjoy. I am not the desirable demographic, and I don't have the buying power or desire as the demographic they are marketing to. I am very grateful that Adam's label sees something in him that they believe will sell in the long run, and they are investing in Adam. I am very grateful that Adam went the route of Idol to get noticed, and that he got the opportunity to show his potential and his appeal.

Listening once (twice, five times) again to the Adam/Nikka YT. Creepy views of Adam's mouth/throat included, which, of course, fascinate me. What's so great about this? 1. Technically speaking, he demonstrates a full two octave range in about a minute --- at the top, an E5, and the bottom an E3. More range than most all of the male pop guys I have heard. 2. This is Adam's voice raw. No electronics, no reverb, no tweaks, of course no autotune. Adam au naturale. 3. This shows Adam's smooth transition between his head and chest registers. The second time he sings the phrase he shifts into head voice for the final note he adds at 0:16. Again with head voice at 0:23, then, for the run going down and smooth blended voice thruout until it ends in rich chest voice. A belting chest voice with added head resonance at 0:46 for the run down, then shifting back to head voice for the light end of the phrase, showing power and subtlety on one phrase. 4. This shows Adam's creative ability to turn a phrase and make a tune out of nothing. We have heard that many times live with some of the rock covers that normally don't move out of a narrow range, but with Adam have all kinds of soaring vocals. Those might be rehearsed, this is obviously off the top of his head. 5. The mouth shot shows him executing a vibrato with great muscle control. 6. The ending belting battle shows great breath support. 7. The whole thing shows Adam's fun sense of humor. He is not at all afraid of even mocking himself and his voice/stylings. Plus we get his delightful laugh, which Angelina described to me as looking like glittery gold and silver bubbles (she has synesthesia, and SEES sounds). All this in 1:30. A brief glimpse of why Adam is worth our adoration and stanning. Cassie, loved your whole post, but that bit about Adam's laugh being gold and silvery bubbles is the BEST EVAH!!!!!
