Just because I love it, and it is NOT ADAM so qualifies for this thread. and as far as current pop, I have to shamefacedly admit to a fondness for Psy:

Wow! That second song is so well sung, so well performed, with such emotion, such poignancy. I am impressed with Christian. Also, impressed with the song. So unexpected, so musically sophisticated ..... oops, maybe I should say "complex." Thanks for sharing. That song always makes me cry. Yes, it is so unexpected... I believe there's a beautiful RL story behind it. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elegies_%28William_Finn%29I think you can find other songs on youtube (not sung by Christian Borle but still) - just type in Elegies: A Song Cycle, it's interesting music, pretty surprising. Anyway, I'm glad you liked it.

Moved from the daily thread. Redpanda asked me what I thought about Alisan Porter's voice.
Alisan is a very well trained, accomplished singer with lots of experience. When I listened to the podcast and she was asked what she had learned from Christina as a coach I thought..... "What could she learn? She is already beyond Christina as a singer." However, Christina is a SUPERSTAR. Vocally, technically, there might not be anything Christina can contribute, but she might have good tips for presentation.
Personally, I do not care for Alisan's tone when she belts those high notes. I don't hear any warmth or depth in the tone. It sounds strident to me. But, Alisan is not alone in that. It is how most pop divas sing/belt the big notes. It is a style. Alisan CAN sing in a beautiful, unforced head voice, but that is not the pop sound she is going after.
Alisan certainly has the voice to win the competition. But, as we all know, it is not really about the voice in these shows. Or not chiefly about the voice. She has to present herself in a way that wins the voters' love; her back story of early fame as a child star, followed by struggles and addiction, pulling herself out, having a loving husband and children and normal life.... all that might appeal to the voters.

2 bands I've recently got into, they played Paris last Tuesday:
Savages -
Bo Ningen - a noise band reminiscent of Sonic Youth, Fugazi, kind of Krautrock ish.
I love their lead singer, Taigen, I wanna be him in a band! My mate met him at the Paris gig and said he was really sweet. Both bands live in London.

Those women could sing opera. It is like Opera mixed with metal... Not sure I liked the male vocals on that last one, they always seem so gruff in comparison to the women's crystal clear vocals. How does Holland produce so many wonderful female vocalists?

Ok, I'm going to add another group I love, I love the singer's voice. The band formed in Leeds. They get their name from the delta symbol ∆, which you get on a mac by pressing Alt + J, hence Alt j.
The third track on This Is All Yours, Nara is the second song in a trilogy. Arrival in Nara, Nara, Leaving Nara.
It's a song about being gay and facing discrimination, and wanting to run away, to 'be a deer in Nara'. Nara is a city in japan where deer are treated as godlike creatures and allowed to roam the streets unhindered.
The song also mentions sources where homophobia has featured in the news in recent times, such as: - Alabama, an extremely conservative US state, - Alvan E. Bovay, founder of the Republican party, and - 'Hallelujah', acknowledging a religious root to prejudice.
Their lyrics 'I've discovered a man like no other man' and 'unpin your butterflies Russia' are a reference to Russia's vehement discrimination of homosexuals, as evidenced by the recent Olympic Games 2014, which is what provoked the writing of the song, 'butterflies' here represents the LGBTQI community.
There are references to other works such as Blue Is The Warmest Colour.
I've copied and pasted the lyrics:
Soon I'm gonna marry a man like no other Light the fuse, hallelujah, hallelujah
Love Love is the warmest colour Petrol blues, hallelujah, hallelujah Comes Saut dans le vide, my lover In my youth the greatest tide washed up my prize You
Follow, let him go, let him lead me be Love is a pharaoh, and in front of me I thought let him be where he'd want to be Love is a pharaoh and he's boning me
I've discovered a man like no other man I've discovered a man like no other man I've discovered a man like no other man I've found a love to love like no other can
I've found a love to love like no other can He's found me, my Aslan
Hallelujah, Bovay, Alabama Marry a man like no other Hallelujah, Bovay, Alabama Love is the warmest colour Hallelujah, Bovay, Alabama Unpin your butterflies, Russia Hallelujah, Bovay, Alabama To be a deer in Nara

The one blessing is that Alisan doesn't sing either with a nasally or forced throat sound - agree re some of her high notes feel very piercing (bit like that tone little girls screaming when they play have - it goes straight through you and not in a good way). Alisan has a few songs on You Tube that are lovely so will be interesting to see if Xtina just gives her belting songs or lets her dial it back here and there to show the different colors of her voice. I thought this song on youtube was quite lovely:

cassie, another question about another singer.
Siobhan Magnus intrigued me when she was on Idol. Here's a sample:
Now she is performing American Songbook songs with Mark Mahar and the Boston Swing Band.
Some questions:
Although I think her voice is lovely, IMO, it doesn't move me. The only word I can think of is that her voice is thin to my ears. Could you tell me what you think?
Thanks!
Sidenote: in my wants and dreams section: Adam singing At Last.

Hmmm, interesting. She has a better voice than I anticipated from what I saw on Idol. She seemed too full of herself then, and maybe that turned me off. Here she sings lightly, without belting or pushing her voice, and it is pleasant to listen to.
I understand your comment about her voice being thin. I agree, it lacks warmth and roundness in the tone. It doesn't sound at all rich to me. Also, there are times when I feel she is not supporting the tone very strongly, making it, not off pitch, but maybe wavering or just a little tentative. Her voice sounds young, to me.
The other thing is I don't get any FEELING from her interpretation. She is adding some variation on the melody, and some ornamentation, but it still sounds pretty generic to me. Maybe you are reacting the same way?
It is hard for me to explain, but maybe I can give an example. Here is Jane Monheit, who has a similar range or type of voice. Her voice sounds richer, tho', and she creates such feeling in her interpretation. It is subtle things like extending a note just a little longer, pausing, speeding up a phrase a little, bending a note a little, caressing a note or phrase, if you know what I mean. What do you think?
