Just because I love it, and it is NOT ADAM so qualifies for this thread. and as far as current pop, I have to shamefacedly admit to a fondness for Psy:

Wow! That second song is so well sung, so well performed, with such emotion, such poignancy. I am impressed with Christian. Also, impressed with the song. So unexpected, so musically sophisticated ..... oops, maybe I should say "complex." Thanks for sharing. That song always makes me cry. Yes, it is so unexpected... I believe there's a beautiful RL story behind it. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elegies_%28William_Finn%29I think you can find other songs on youtube (not sung by Christian Borle but still) - just type in Elegies: A Song Cycle, it's interesting music, pretty surprising. Anyway, I'm glad you liked it.

Moved from the daily thread. Redpanda asked me what I thought about Alisan Porter's voice.
Alisan is a very well trained, accomplished singer with lots of experience. When I listened to the podcast and she was asked what she had learned from Christina as a coach I thought..... "What could she learn? She is already beyond Christina as a singer." However, Christina is a SUPERSTAR. Vocally, technically, there might not be anything Christina can contribute, but she might have good tips for presentation.
Personally, I do not care for Alisan's tone when she belts those high notes. I don't hear any warmth or depth in the tone. It sounds strident to me. But, Alisan is not alone in that. It is how most pop divas sing/belt the big notes. It is a style. Alisan CAN sing in a beautiful, unforced head voice, but that is not the pop sound she is going after.
Alisan certainly has the voice to win the competition. But, as we all know, it is not really about the voice in these shows. Or not chiefly about the voice. She has to present herself in a way that wins the voters' love; her back story of early fame as a child star, followed by struggles and addiction, pulling herself out, having a loving husband and children and normal life.... all that might appeal to the voters.

Those women could sing opera. It is like Opera mixed with metal... Not sure I liked the male vocals on that last one, they always seem so gruff in comparison to the women's crystal clear vocals. How does Holland produce so many wonderful female vocalists?
