cassie
this is Kesha's new song:
She sings a note that starts at ~4:20. It sounds like it might be an attempt at what they call Mariah Carey's "whistle register."
Is that what it is?
It doesn't sound pleasing to my ear, I just wondered if it was technically proficient.

Probably. Can't tell for sure. In the music world I grew up with, whistle register was not considered a legitimate or desirable singing tool. More a trick than a usable technique. One cannot sing lyrics, one cannot vary the volume or tone in whistle register. But, some in pop consider it impressive. Meh.

Thanks, cassie. Have to agree, I'm not on board with it either, whether it's Kesha or Mariah.
Good to know there is not really a proficiency per se.
Now Adam, singing Spread Your Wings? Thanks to you I know how technically outstanding Adam is, so he's got that covered.
And I can just marvel and feels.

mymodernmet.com/we-are-the-champions-a-capella/A capella Freddie studio recordings. Hmmm. Interesting. I imagine this will be a very unpopular opinion, but, for me, hearing naked Freddie makes the flaws and inconsistencies in his voice much more obvious than the full version. Definitely not a trained voice at all. I don't find it pleasant to listen to. But for those who do, I can imagine that Adam's voice would be equally unappealing. Much too polished, lacking rawness, lacking "authenticity". I get the comment from some that it sounds "too Broadway." To each their own.

For me, it's not necessarily trained or non-trained, but listening to Freddie does give me any particular feelings. I can certainly appreciate his contribution to the world of music, same as Beatles, etc., but I don't get the goosebumps I get when I listen to Adam sing. He has a way of emoting that just gives me the shivers. Don't know what it is.
I can't stop listening to One More Try, loved the song so much I downloaded GM's version from ITunes. It's really pretty....then I went back and kept listening to Adam's version lol. Wish I could hear Adam do a cover of Different Corner, I LOVE that GM song.
I looked up a lot of Queen vids when Adam started singing with them, but I have to honestly say I prefer QUAL to the original Queen. I'm not a rock fan to begin with and I just don't really find Freddie appealing.
It sure is a good thing there a so many different genres and so many different singers out there. A little bit for everybody.

Speaking of whistle notes, I've been wanting to ask what your opinion is of this 9 year old. Comments are saying she is doing a whistle register around 2:15. I was impressed with what the did at about 1:47. It reminded me of something Adam did in A Change is gonna come. Since I don't know much about what is technically good in a voice, what do you think of her? On YouTube videos, there is a raging debate going on who is better on AGT, her or another 9 year old from Hong Kong whose father is a voice teacher. Since she is about the same age as Adam when he started, it makes me wonder if he had this kind of control at his age. www.youtube.com/watch?v=VRjT1bDuYM4

I'm not a rock fan to begin with and I just don't really find Freddie appealing. It sure is a good thing there a so many different genres and so many different singers out there. A little bit for everybody. I assume you mean that Freddie does NOT give you feelings. Me neither. But, that is in part due to his lack of training. (Not to say that trained singers all give me feelings. Adam is particularly good at that.) Singers in training learn to finely control their voice. They can hit a note with power and force, or float it tenderly. They can start softly and increase the intensity of a phrase or a single note. They can shape their tone to be piercing and brittle or warm and round. They can sing with a straight tone or add vibrato lightly or strongly, fast or slow. They can sustain a note or phrase, and can punch them in a machine gun, staccato fashion. These things plus other techniques color the sound in a way that add emotion to their interpretation. Untrained singers are often limited in how they can sing a note or phrase. Limited by the amount of breath and breath control, limited by where it is in their range (if it is high it has to be belted out, if it is low, it wobbles), limited in the color or warmth (or lack thereof) of the sound. They may not be able to sing with a vibrato, or their vibrato may be inconsistent; sometimes fast, sometimes slow, sometimes broad, sometimes bleating. Their voice may break, or may hit a note flat or sharp, ruining the emotion of the moment. There are lots of little tricks to add emotion to a song, but if the singer is struggling to hit notes, catch their breath, or handle a melody line or riff, they don't have the time and concentration to incorporate these tricks (if they know them). Adam has so mastered the technical aspects of singing that it comes instinctively without him having to focus on production. Therefore, he is free to consider the lyrics, the intent, the arrangement, and the audience reaction and play with the emotional content.

Haha, yes, I meant Freddie does NOT, while Adam does lol.....helps to proofread your post before you hit post.
I do know that I get very easily distracted and pulled out of a song if I hear a weird note...and then I start listening to the notes instead of the song itself. I also don't enjoy women's voices, or bass voices....at all.
At the same time, a voice can be utterly perfect, and it does nothing for me....ie Andrea Boccelli. He has a gorgeous voice, and bores me to tears. There seems to be no inflection, no emotion in his songs.
I have a cd by Vittorio Grigolo, not opera, but more of a popera type music and it's utterly gorgeous. Some of the songs are unbelievable with his high, clear tenor voice. But then I saw the vid last week of he and Kerry singing the Queen song and thought he utterly mangled it. Didn't like it at all.
I'm thinking I'm just picky....don't like Adele, Lady Gaga, all the popular voices, but give me Adam and a smile breaks out on my face...every single time.

After the wonderful Feel Something Foundation LGBTQ+ Roundtable, I went searching for some songs by VINCINT, who I knew was amazing, but I hadn't really heard all his songs. I found this gem! It's a great video too, but the song itself is just so powerful and empowering. I love the lyrics, which are basically saying - I need you to be supportive, etc. but I don't need you to save me, I'll save myself! And VINCINT is a great singer, the melody is really cool. It's just a terrific dance song. If this were a mainstream pop artist, the song would have been a huge hit. Hopefully, things will change in the future and artists like VINCINT will get more success, which they so deserve. www.youtube.com/watch?v=wWnVfRF14pk
